DK Metcalf 2020 Outlook
Metcalf started immediately as a rookie for the Seahawks and became the team's No. 2 receiver opposite Tyler Lockett. He posted 58 receptions on 100 targets for 900 yards and seven touchdowns. But he's not happy. "I had way too many drops in my opinion," the youngster said after the season. Metcalf had seven drops in 2019, tied for 11th-most in the NFL. He's also presumably including his fumbles. He lost three, two of which came in huge moments. To remedy the problem, Metcalf plans to utilize the jugs machine, catch tennis balls, work on one-handed catches and pretty much everything else that will help his concentration. That extra work is nothing new for him. Metcalf was regularly seen catching balls out of the jugs machine well after practice was over during the season. Metcalf's impressive rookie campaign set the table for what could be a special career in Seattle. There's no reason why he and Tyler Lockett can't become one of the most formidable 1-2 punches in all of football, especially with Russell Wilson throwing them the football. A physical freak who ranked ninth among wide receivers in red-zone routes run per game, Metcalf's rookie success is just the tip of his future statistical iceberg.
DK Metcalf 2019 Outlook
The Seahawks used the final pick of the second round of the NFL draft on Metcalf, just as reports of Doug Baldwin’s imminent retirement began to circulate. GM John Schneider said Baldwin's status wasn't a major factor in the team's decision to draft Metcalf. "At that point with D.K., that didn't really weigh in," Schneider said. Still, Baldwin’s departure creates a serious opportunity for Metcalf, who now has a clearer path to a starting assignment opposite Tyler Lockett. Even if the Seahawks continue to be one of the run-heaviest offenses in the NFL, Russell Wilson's ability to throw the deep ball plays right into Metcalf's strengths. Meanwhile, Metcalf impressed during the team's initial rookie minicamp. According to NBC Sports Northwest's Aaron Fentress, "(Metcalf's) explosion is real. He had defensive backs backing up before the snap as to not get beaten deep and Metcalf would still run past them. And the sight of shorter cornerbacks running after Metcalf is something to behold. No way he doesn't win a lot of 50/50 balls." There is no denying that Metcalf can run (he posted a 4.33 in the 40 at the NFL Scouting Combine), is athletic and could become a matchup nightmare. But none of that guarantees he will live up to his potential. That's something we'll all watch play out -- or not -- in coming weeks.
