Irv Smith Jr. 2023 Outlook
The Bengals signed Smith to be their starting tight end, replacing Hayden Hurst. Early reports have been positive. QB Joe Burrow told reporters during the team's initial OTAs that Smith’s work ethic has impressed. “A lot of hard work has been put in behind closed doors that people don’t get to see,” Smith said. “But that’s the blessing to have that confidence in yourself. People can pump you up but you have to want it from within.” Smith spent four seasons with Kirk Cousins in Minnesota, catching 91 passes for 858 yards and nine touchdowns in the three seasons he played. (Smith spent 2021 on injured reserve.) While receivers Ja'Marr Chase, Tee Higgins and Tyler Boyd are likely to remain Burrow’s primary targets, Smith’s position is still important in Cincinnati’s passing game. Hurst finished last year with 52 receptions for 414 yards with a pair of touchdowns despite missing time due to injury. Time will tell if Smith can replicate -- or exceed -- that kind of production in 2023.
Irv Smith Jr. 2022 Outlook
As SI.com's Will Ragatzapr recently reminded readers, late last summer, Smith appeared to be in store for a huge 2021 season. Kyle Rudolph was out of the picture, meaning Smith was finally the team's unquestioned No. 1 TE heading into his third year. He was having a fantastic training camp and looked poised to take off after delivering limited production through his first two seasons. But a season-ending torn meniscus put the kibosh on that. Ever since he had surgery, Smith's focus has been on getting himself prepared to have the breakout season in 2022 that he was supposed to have last year. He doesn't turn 24 until August, but as a 2019 second-round pick, this is the final year of his rookie contract. A big season could help him earn a nice second contract, whether that's in Minnesota or elsewhere. Meanwhile, though he's not expected back on the field until training camp, Smith has been working closely with the Vikings' medical and strength staffs and focusing on learning a completely new offense under head coach Kevin O'Connell. With Dalvin Cook at running back and Jefferson, Adam Thielen, and K.J. Osborn at receiver, they've got a bunch of weapons. But Smith brings a different element of speed and athleticism to the offense in the middle of the field. He's worth a look as your TE2.
Irv Smith Jr. 2021 Outlook
The Vikings released Kyle Rudolph this offseason in what seemed like an obvious move. Minnesota needed cap space and based on what Rudolph said publicly, a restructure didn't seem in the cards. But as USA Today's Jack White pointed out, there was also another reason for Rudolph's departure: Smith has been promising. Now, he has a chance to take the tight end reins. Bleacher Report tabbed Smith Jr. as Minnesota's potential breakout candidate. Here's what Gary Davenport of B/R wrote about Smith: "Smith may not have a ton of catches, but he has taken advantage of the targets he's received. He has hauled in over 73 percent of his targets and the second-round pick out of Alabama has recorded a rating of 134.4 on passes he was targeted on. (He) has dropped all of two passes in two years." SI.com's Michael Fabiano echoes the love, noting that over the final four weeks of the season, Smith had 15 catches for 183 yards, three touchdowns and 51 fantasy points. That was good for the fourth-most points scored at the tight end position in that time. No shortage of upside here thanks, in part, to a fairly narrow band of consistent contributors in the Minnesota offense.
