Noah Fant 2020 Outlook
Fantasy managers looking for a potential breakout TE should note the following: Fant ranked 16th in fantasy points as a rookie, but he ranked just 24th in targets per game. Fant was also one of the better players at the position in yards per catch average (14.1), and he ranked seventh in yards after the catch. From a fantasy perspective, after averaging just 5.25 fantasy points and 2.00 points per touch in his first eight games, Fant's averages rose to 8.6 points per game and 3.14 points per touch in the second half. Even with the Broncos’ draft day additions at wideout (and at tight end), Fant’s output seems destined to increase this fall. According to ESPN.com's Jeff Legwold, Fant's long-term development hinges on adding some diversity to his route tree. As a rookie, he didn't always create separation on routes that required short-area quickness; he consistently made his impact on routes when he could simply open up and run as soon as he came out of his stance. To move into the 60-, 75-catch range, Legwold believes Fant will have to work to be more effective in short-to-intermediate routes. That said, the ability is there and with a promising young QB in Drew Lock, some observers have suggested Fant could turn into this season's version of Mark Andrews.
Noah Fant 2019 Outlook
The Broncos selected Iowa’s Fant in the first round of this year's NFL draft, which was exciting news for new QB Joe Flacco. "The tight end in this offense," Flacco said, "I think can be a big-time player if he can run and get a feel for how we run a couple of routes that we have in." Why does that matter? Fant was known as a receiving TE with the Hawkeyes, hauling in 39 receptions for 519 yards and seven touchdowns as a senior. And, as USA Today reminded readers, Flacco has had success with several TEs in his career, and Fant becomes the next in line to benefit from playing with a TE-friendly QB. But it goes beyond that. The Broncos saw firsthand last year what an Iowa product (George Kittle) is capable of doing at the tight end position to a defense that simply doesn't have an answer. To that end they brought in part of the coaching staff from that 49ers team (new OC Rich Scangarello was the 49ers QB’s coach) and drafted a freakishly athletic Iowa tight end of their own. Nothing is certain with rookie TEs, but the pieces are in place for early success here.
