Tony Pollard 2020 Outlook
Dallas "resolved" its problems with this position group in 2019 when they drafted Pollard, who "threatened" to take Ezekiel Elliott's job during training camp before Elliott and the Cowboys agreed to a trend-setting, $90 million pact. Last year's drama, though, is last year's drama and there are no cliffhangers in Dallas this time around. The Cowboys' running back room is settled for the next three years with Pollard locked in as one of the top handcuffs in fantasy. As a rookie, he had two 100-yard rushing games, finishing with 455 yards on 86 carries with two touchdowns. He caught 15 passes for 107 yards and a touchdown. In his 101 touches backing up Elliott, Pollard averaged 0.88 fantasy points per touch, tying him with Zeke among RBs. Is it possible we might see even more of him this season? Could he be a multifaceted player in new HC Mike McCarthy's offense who could fill the Ty Montgomery role? As ESPN.com reminded readers, Montgomery was a receiver who moved to running back. Perhaps Pollard can do the reverse, as he played receiver at Memphis. He has a versatile skillset that could earn touches in different ways than he saw as a rookie. We're unlikely to get a good feel for that given the unique offseason, but it's something worth watching as the season draws nearer.
Tony Pollard 2019 Outlook
As SBNation.com pointed out, the Cowboys have wanted a change-of-pace back for a while now. They had their eyes on Donnel Pumphrey, but the Eagles traded up for him in the 2017 draft. They were intrigued by Nyheim Hines a year later, but the Colts snatched him up a round earlier than the Cowboys were perhaps comfortable with. Therefore, it is no surprise that the Cowboys came away from this year's draft with a similar-style player in Pollard. The former Tiger is a gadget player that can impact the game in a variety of ways -- be it running the football, as a receiver out of the backfield, or in the return game. Darrell Henderson was the lead back for Memphis, but Pollard was still able to account for over 1,000 yards of offense and nine touchdowns in 2018, in addition to his 600-plus kick return yards. Tavon Austin is entering a contract season, so Pollard has a golden opportunity to showcase his skill set and overtake Austin's role in the offense. OC Kellen Moore reportedly had a big say in adding Pollard to the team, perhaps foreshadowing what the offense will look like this year and beyond. We'll see if Pollard can find a way to fit in behind Ezekiel Elliott.
