Tony Pollard 2022 Outlook
The Cowboys running back duo of Ezekiel Elliott and Pollard had been one of the best in the league in terms of production for a few seasons. For a variety of reasons, not the least of which were injuries, that production has fallen off. When Elliott was down with injuries in 2020 and 2021, Pollard was there as a second option and performed well both running the ball and as a pass catcher. Some fans -- and fantasy managers -- even called for Pollard to be the starter and relegate Elliott to the backup role. As SI.com's Timm Hamm contends, regardless of the pecking order, Pollard is a quality back who has been nothing but productive since being drafted by the Cowboys in the fourth round in 2019 out of Memphis. In fact, Pollard has his best statistical season in 2021 in almost every rushing and receiving category. It came out late in the season that Elliott was dealing with a knee injury, which would explain some of the extra usage of Pollard. That includes the kick-return game, where he returned a kickoff for a touchdown last season against the Las Vegas Raiders on Thanksgiving. Pollard averaged 28.8 yards per return in 2021, which would have placed him second in the league if he had enough returns to qualify for that statistic. But thinking he'll move ahead of Elliott, barring injury, is unrealistic. At least this season.
Tony Pollard 2021 Outlook
Make no mistake, Ezekiel Elliott is the clear-cut lead back here. He's paid to handle the featured role for the Cowboys. But, as SBNation.com put it, "The guy behind him is chomping at the bit for more chances. ..." Pollard burst onto the scene in 2020 to contribute in multiple facets, including the passing game and in special teams. He didn't post huge numbers (435 yards on 101 carries for 27.2 yards per game), but there were several instances in which Mike McCarthy relied on him for the brunt of the team's backfield production. Most notable was a Week 15 performance in a win over San Francisco, when Pollard rushed 12 times for 69 yards and two touchdowns, adding in another 63 yards receiving on six catches. He was dynamic in ways Elliott had failed to be for much of the year and brought back a level of explosiveness and big play ability out of the backfield (per FantasyPros.com, a league-leading 83.4 percent of Pollard's rushing yards came after contact). That said, Pollard played just 28 percent of the team's offensive snaps last season. Fantasy managers expecting Pollard to be more than a change of pace -- or to get a marked increase in snap share -- would be off-base.
Tony Pollard 2020 Outlook
Dallas "resolved" its problems with this position group in 2019 when they drafted Pollard, who "threatened" to take Ezekiel Elliott's job during training camp before Elliott and the Cowboys agreed to a trend-setting, $90 million pact. Last year's drama, though, is last year's drama and there are no cliffhangers in Dallas this time around. The Cowboys' running back room is settled for the next three years with Pollard locked in as one of the top handcuffs in fantasy. As a rookie, he had two 100-yard rushing games, finishing with 455 yards on 86 carries with two touchdowns. He caught 15 passes for 107 yards and a touchdown. In his 101 touches backing up Elliott, Pollard averaged 0.88 fantasy points per touch, tying him with Zeke among RBs. Is it possible we might see even more of him this season? Could he be a multifaceted player in new HC Mike McCarthy's offense who could fill the Ty Montgomery role? As ESPN.com reminded readers, Montgomery was a receiver who moved to running back. Perhaps Pollard can do the reverse, as he played receiver at Memphis. He has a versatile skillset that could earn touches in different ways than he saw as a rookie. We're unlikely to get a good feel for that given the unique offseason, but it's something worth watching as the season draws nearer.
