Gardner Minshew 2022 Outlook
The Eagles acquired Minshew from the Jacksonville Jaguars last year for a conditional sixth-round pick. He ascended into the No. 2 slot behind starter Jalen Hurts after Joe Flacco was dealt to the New York Jets in October and filled the role nicely, going 20-of-25 for 242 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions in place of an injured Hurts in a Week 13 win over those same Jets. Minshew played almost exactly as expected, lighting up the Jets with short passes and competing well against pressure while playing with backups against the Cowboys starters in Week 18. His performances further bolstered some pretty impressive career stats, as he's now completed 63 percent of his passes while throwing 41 TDs to 12 interceptions over 22 starts. Minshew is eager to add to that résumé. He confirmed he approached head coach Nick Sirianni after the Jets win to see what it would take to become the starter full-time. Nonetheless, the team went back to Hurts who heads into the season locked in as the starter once again. Minshew remains under contract and is a good plug-and-play option or trade chip. For now, he's the former: A high-end backup. But it's definitely worth watching to see if any teams suddenly become QB needy and decide to see what the Eagles might like in return.
Gardner Minshew 2020 Outlook
The trade of Nick Foles to Chicago this offseason was good news for Minshew. As a rookie who was just trying to find his way onto the field, Minshew quietly had at least 16 points in eight of his 12 starts in 2019. Minshew is also more mobile than he gets credit for -- he had at least 27 rushing yards in eight games -- but he will benefit from the pass-first mentality of new QB coach Ben McAdoo and offensive coordinator Jay Gruden. It will be Gruden's job to revitalize the offense with a more potent vertical passing game all while helping develop Minshew into a more polished quarterback. The belief is Gruden's West Coast offense scheme is a good fit for the second-year QB and should create more scoring opportunities. It's needed because the Jaguars ranked near the bottom of the league last season in scoring at 26th (18.6) and were 31st in red zone TD scoring percentage (40.43). Gruden's offense is designed around play-action passing, taking shots downfield and quick reads by the quarterback. Remember, Minshew flashed big-play ability, throwing 21 touchdowns to just six interceptions. Worth noting: His 129.0 QB Rating on passes that traveled at least 20 yards in the air was the best in the NFL, while Patrick Mahomes was the runner-up with a 122.9 QB rating.
