Jarrett Stidham 2020 Outlook
Even with the high-profile addition of Cam Newton in June, the Patriots will have a quarterback competition in the preseason for the first time since 2001 when Tom Brady was in his second year. Newton joins the club after three seasons spent battling injury. His fall was precipitous enough for Carolina to part ways with the former first-overall pick in the NFL Draft. Hoyer, 34, has played for seven teams in 11 NFL seasons, started 38 games, won 16 games and has an 0-1 mark as a post-season starter. Hoyer has never started a game for the Patriots, and the belief prior to Newton’s arrival had Stidham pegged as the more likely starter this season. Stidham, a fourth-round choice last season, played 15 snaps in three games as a rookie, going 2-for-4 for 14 yards and an interception. Frankly, no one knows what Stidham can do in the pros. His stats at Auburn in 2017 and 2018 weren't especially impressive. And now, assuming Newton is good to go for training camp as expected, it seems Stidham’s chances of starting will continue to hinge on the health of a veteran superstar.
Jarrett Stidham 2019 Outlook
According to Clutchpoints.com, when the Patriots drafted Stidham with the 133rd overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, it led to immediate speculation regarding the team's situation at QB beyond Tom Brady. So who are the Patriots getting in Stidham? Is he the QB of the future? As the Boston Herald noted, well-respected draft analysts like Daniel Jeremiah and Greg Cosell have talked extensively about Stidham’s natural gifts and upside. Stidham also arrives with a unique life experience. He’s been destined for this moment since high school, and has dealt with everything that comes with being a five-star quarterback from a football-obsessed Texas town. So while he opened initial OTA sessions working behind Brian Hoyer and Danny Etling (with Brady skipping voluntary OTAs for the second straight offseason), Stidham knows he has a lot to learn. As NESN.com noted, the most difficult transition for Stidham is one all rookie quarterbacks must go through. “It’s just there’s a gap from college to pro,” Stidham said. “Talking about schematics, defenses, whatever, terminology, it’s an adjustment. While the Patriots can hold three quarterbacks on their 53-man roster, it will be interesting to see who they decide to keep, which will make this offseason program even more important for Stidham.
