Drew Lock 2020 Outlook
Lock was finally healthy enough to play in the team's final five games and shined. His performance was enough to give Broncos fans hope that GM John Elway may have finally found the team's next guy under center, but that still isn't a sure bet. Lock needs to prove those five games weren't a fluke by continuing on the path toward becoming a franchise quarterback in 2020. That said, the Broncos had a terrific draft and there's plenty of firepower for new OC Pat Shurmur to utilize in Lock's development. Fresh off a breakout 2019 season, Courtland Sutton has a new running mate in rookie Jerry Jeudy. The Broncos have an athletic tight end in 2019 first-rounder Noah Fant. And, as Bleacher Report's Gary Davenport notes, after adding Melvin Gordon to a backfield that already included Phillip Lindsay and Royce Freeman, Denver has maybe the deepest backfield stable in the league. Davenport added: "The stage is set for Lock to do more than just build on his 4-1 finish to the 2019 season. It's set for him to guide the Broncos to post-season contention and become a star in the making under center. ..." Given all that, drafting Lock as a QB2 with upside isn't a bad idea.
Drew Lock 2019 Outlook
As Profootballtalk.com put it, "John Elway has swung and missed on quarterbacks again, and again, and again and again. ..." Like any good hitter, however, the Broncos' GM will keep on swinging until he finally connects. His latest stroke was moving up in the second round of April's draft to snag Lock, the top-graded signal caller on his draft board. "You're always trying to find an answer to the quarterback position," Elway said. And despite his misses on the likes of Brock Osweiler and Paxton Lynch, and despite tossing money at Case Keenum, Elway is absolutely correct that he can't stop taking swings. Right now, the plan is for the Broncos to ride Joe Flacco next season -- and maybe in 2020 if all goes well -- then hand off the baton to Lock, who started 46 games over four seasons at Missouri, tossing for 12,193 yards and 99 TDs to 39 INTs over his career. Indeed, Elway invoked the Brett Favre-Aaron Rodgers comparison after selecting Lock 42nd overall, but Flacco is not a three-time league MVP and local legend in Denver like Favre was in Green Bay. In other words, if Flacco and/or the Broncos' offense struggle, this will be another QB situation that will get interesting in a hurry.
