Gus Edwards 2023 Outlook
Edwards was limited to nine games in 2022 and posted career lows in attempts and yardage, after he landed in the 700s in rushing yards in each of his first three NFL seasons. Kenyan Drake filled in while J.K. Dobbins and Edwards dealt with injuries, but Drake has moved on and Dobbins and Edwards are the clear Nos. 1 and 2 again this season. That’s a nice place for Edwards to be -- a reliable ball-carrier on a run-heavy Baltimore Ravens team. Though the man who designed Baltimore’s offense, Greg Roman, resigned after the 2022 season, new offensive coordinator Todd Monken should be good for Edwards’ fantasy outlook as he creates ways to lessen the burden on Lamar Jackson to make plays with his legs. “I think the more talented you are around your quarterback, the less he has to ... shoulder the load, because you’re excited about getting others the football where they can utilize their skillset,” Monken told the team website. Both Dobbins and Edwards are goal-line threats, and if you’re going to draft the former, handcuffing him to the latter isn’t the craziest idea.
Gus Edwards 2022 Outlook
Baltimore's starting ball-carrier this year will most likely be J.K. Dobbins. Behind him, Edwards will share a large brunt of carries having strung together three consecutive seasons of 700-plus rushing yards. Both Dobbins and Edwards are recovering from season-ending injuries in 2020, but, as Fansided.com's Kristen Wong recently suggested, if all goes well, they have the proven talent and experience to lead the Ravens' crowded running back room. That said, it's still possible one or both could start training camp on the PUP list. This means incoming rookie Tyler Badie will get a chance to show what he can do and try to overtake Justice Hill for the third running back. Hill also suffered a season-ending injury last season. The team also added Mike Davis, who was released by the Falcons, to their roster in May and let Ty'Son Williams move on as a free agent. But as long as Dobbins and Edwards are healthy -- and both will be a full year removed from their respective ACL tears when the season opens, they'll join QB Lamar Jackson as the team's primary rushing weapons. In his three healthy seasons with the Ravens, Edwards has been Mr. Consistent with 718 yards rushing as a rookie, 711 yards in 2019 and 723 yards in 2020. He has averaged 5.2 yards rushing for his career. "We've had confidence in Gus since his rookie season," offensive coordinator Greg Roman said last year. "He's our kind of guy. He's really built for what we do.'
Gus Edwards 2021 Outlook
As SI.com recently noted, Edwards has been one of the unsung heroes of the team, serving as an effective downhill runner since signing with Baltimore as an undrafted rookie in 2018. This past season, Edwards, quarterback Lamar Jackson and rookie J.K. Dobbins helped the Ravens lead the league in rushing for the second consecutive season. For the second-straight year, Baltimore had three players -- Jackson (1,005), Dobbins (805) and Edwards -- rush for over 700 yards each. The 2020 Ravens joined the 2019 Ravens and 2011 Panthers as the only teams ever with three 700-yard rushers in a season. Baltimore's 3,071 total rushing yards stand as the third most in a 16-game NFL season. Of course, Edwards has been very productive and steady over the past three seasons, averaging 5.2 yards per carry. Last year, he rumbled for a career-high six touchdowns and showed a little more skill as a receiver. "He can block, [and] he can run the ball well. He can do a lot of things, and that guy is a good player," Dobbins said about Edwards, who was tendered as a restricted free agent in March while the team works on an extension. GM Eric DeCosta does not want to disrupt one of the team's main strengths. "We're a running football team," DeCosta said.
