Boston Scott 2022 Outlook
Scott seemed poised to have a role in the Eagles' offense from the start of the season in 2021, but as PhillyVoice.com's Jimmy Kempski noted, interestingly the veteran back didn't get a carry until Miles Sanders left with his ankle injury against the Raiders in Week 7. Most notably, Scott was effective during the four-game stretch that Sanders was on injured reserve. With both Sanders and Jordan Howard out against the Giants in Week 12, Scott got his best opportunity of the season to produce, but with a six-point deficit near the end of regulation, he lost a fumble that may have cost him playing time down the stretch. Scott is a nice change-of-pace back who has had his share of moments with the Eagles over the last three seasons. He entered this offseason as a restricted free agent, and the cost to retain him on a "right of first refusal" basis was $2,433,000. The Eagles made the easy decision not to tender him, and instead re-signed him to a slightly cheaper deal. Worth noting: The team has yet to retain Howard, leaving Kenneth Gainwell as the only thing standing between Scott and the lead role if anything happens to Sanders. While you might not want to invest draft capital in Scott, keep him on your waiver-wire watch list heading into the season.
Boston Scott 2021 Outlook
As Fansided.com's Matty Breisch put it, "Scott is good for about two elite games a year. ..." In fact, he's been predictably good against the Giants, averaging 108 yards from scrimmage and 1.5 touchdowns per game. But as Breisch further noted, outside of games against the G-Men? "Scott is aggressively ordinary. ..." This is why the addition of Kenneth Gainwell, selected in the fourth round of April's draft, is a concern. While the Eagles can count on Miles Sanders as a home-run threat, he's struggled to produce on a consistent level, and he’s struggled in the passing game. Gainwell has the potential to be a valuable role player and might be used like the Colts used Nyheim Hines in Nick Sirianni's offense. There's a lot of competition for the backup running back spots, but we'll give the final nod to the recently-acquired Kerryon Johnson, whose pass protection skills have been lauded. Jordan Howard is left on the outside looking in, and Scott might not even be a lock, though he's shown himself to be a capable rotational running back. Again, this is a situation to monitor closely before investing.
Boston Scott 2020 Outlook
Scott started the 2019 season buried on the depth chart but contributed solidly once he got the opportunity. With Darren Sproles (hip) and Jordan Howard (shoulder) out, Scott essentially stepped into the "Sproles role" with 176 rushing yards on 44 attempts and 26 catches on 28 targets for 222 receiving yards over the Eagles' last five games, including their wild-card loss. And despite his 5-7 stature, NBCSports.com contends Scott’s natural leverage and stout build help him score touchdowns. (Three of his five scores last season were two-yard runs.) With Sproles officially retired, the 25 year-old Scott should find a consistent role in 2020, and that could have some fringe value for fantasy owners. Remember, Scott was highly effective when he had the ball in his hands. He was productive as both a runner (54.5 points) and receiver (44.4). But even if all goes according to plan, the best-case scenario still has Scott's potential limited by the presence of Miles Sanders. So don't go overboard on draft day.
