Marquez Valdes-Scantling 2023 Outlook
Enjoying the distinction of transitioning from one Super Bowl-winning quarterback to another, Valdes-Scantling played in every game in his first season in Kansas City, catching two touchdown passes from Patrick Mahomes while establishing career highs in receptions, targets and yards. Breakout games, however, weren’t always at the ready for the former Green Bay Packer; Valdes-Scantling topped 100 yards just once, during a Week 7 victory at San Francisco, which also saw his season’s longest reception of 57 yards. Valdes-Scantling’s second-highest output of the season, 90 yards, came during Week 5. Although he caught both his touchdowns after the Chiefs’ bye week in late October, Valdes-Scantling was targeted three times or fewer three times down the stretch. The Chiefs and their fans know what Valdes-Scantling is capable of -- witness his six-catch, 116-yard, one touchdown showing in the AFC Championship -- and will look for more consistency in his second year with the team. Valdes-Scantling shined brightest with several teammates injured. Can he show himself to be a top weapon outright for the reigning world champs?
Marquez Valdes-Scantling 2022 Outlook
On the same day Tyreek Hill was introduced as a Miami Dolphin, the Chiefs signed former Packer Valdes-Scantling to a three-year, $30 million deal. Valdes-Scantling doesn't have the accolades and statistics that Hill does, but he does have the wheels. Hill was clocked at 21.91 mph in Week 14 of the 2020 season, per Next Gen Stats, and the only ball carrier who has been clocked a faster time in the past two seasons is Valdes-Scantling at 22.09 mph. Valdez-Scantling has been a solid option for Aaron Rodgers and the Packers when available and at his best. He had 26 catches for 430 yards and three touchdowns in 11 games last season. MVS' 2020 showing is more to what the Chiefs are likely looking for as he led the NFL with 20.9 yards per catch on 33 grabs for 690 yards and six touchdowns. MVS joins fellow free-agent signee JuJu Smith-Schuster, incoming rookie Skyy Moore, Pro Bowl tight end Travis Kelce and holdover wideout Mecole Hardman to comprise the current K.C. receiving ranks. As wide receivers are concerned, there's plenty of speed and potential, but no prototypical No. 1. That said, the Chiefs have filled their need for speed at receiver with a very intriguing signing in MVS.
Marquez Valdes-Scantling 2021 Outlook
As ZoneCoverage.com's Troy Asseln recently suggested, Valdes-Scantling didn't exactly endear himself to Packers fans last year, at least not consistently. Asseln went on to explain, "For every eye-popping touchdown grab that MVS would catch, it would either be preceded or followed by a drop so unforgivable that it would unite NFL fan bases across the country in their quest to meme the play to death." But ClutchPoint.com's Evan Massey argues that Valdes-Scantling is exactly the kind of "X-factor" Matt LaFleur needs given the concerns about Aaron Rodgers' future with the club. Whether Rodgers or Jordan Love is playing quarterback, they are going to need their weapons to step up. MVS has the potential to be a big-time playmaker. During the 2020 season with the Packers, Valdes-Scantling averaged an impressive 20.9 yards per reception (to go with his six touchdowns). Obviously, he can make a big play anytime he touches the football. Massey conceded Green Bay did go out and draft Amari Rodgers in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft. They also have Allen Lazard on the roster. Both of those guys are quality players, but no one on the roster has the speed or playmaking ability that Valdes-Scantling has. The consistency issue, however, relegates him to late-round best-ball prospect at this point.
