Lamar Jackson 2020 Outlook
Jackson delivered many a fantasy championship while leading the league in touchdowns and earning 2019 NFL MVP honors. In addition to posting a 113.3 passer rating, exceeding the historical average rating of an MVP quarterback (107.8), Jackson rushed for 1,206 yards, breaking Michael Vick's single-season record for a quarterback in the process. Jackson's league-leading marks in passing touchdowns and quarterback rushing yards made him just the second quarterback to do so in NFL history (joining Hall of Famer Steve Young, who accomplished the feat in 1994 with nearly 1,000 less rushing yards). Jackson's unprecedented tally also landed him in sixth place across the entire NFL in rushing yards. Per FantasyPros, Jackson threw a touchdown on 9.0 percent of his passes in 2019, the fourth-highest mark of all-time. From a fantasy perspective, NFL.com notes that Jackson was a top-5 quarterback 10 times (no other signal-caller hit the mark more than seven times), and he ranked in the top 14 in all but one (Week 5) of his 15 games. He was the top-scoring fantasy quarterback four times. No one else hit that mark more than twice. He also scored 20-plus fantasy points 13 times and led the position in games with 30-plus points (7). We don't advocate drafting QBs early, but if you're okay with that we can think of worse options than rolling with Jackson.
Lamar Jackson 2019 Outlook
Newly-appointed OC Greg Roman said earlier this year that the team is redefining their entire offensive approach and tailoring it to Jackson as he prepares to enter his second NFL season as a starter. Beyond addressing the importance of a "powerful" offensive line, Roman also outlined a couple of areas where Jackson has to improve on his rookie performance. Ball security is a "big emphasis" and improving as a passer is the other. But Roman said he's seen growth from Jackson on that front that leaves him feeling the "sky's the limit." Until that progress shows on the field, however, remember that Jackson's fantasy value last season came mostly from his single-season QB-record 147 carries (in just eight starts). The question for fantasy owners is whether that kind of workload is sustainable. History suggests it's not (Cam Newton has come the closest, averaging 116 carries per year over eight seasons) and throwing is going to become necessary at some point. That being the case, the Ravens went out of their way to add speed to their receiving corps in April’s draft with the selections of Marquise Brown and Miles Boykin. The team also has a strong group at tight end and solid depth in the backfield with Mark Ingram now the headliner. Still, if you're drafting Jackson for the rushing efforts, be sure to factor in the associated risk.
Lamar Jackson 2018 Outlook
Giving up a second-round pick in 2019 to get Jackson was not an overly risky play. As NFL.com noted, Jackson appears to have great upside and he's under no pressure to play in 2018. Indeed, GM Eric DeCosta, who replaces Ozzie Newsome, reiterated his strong belief in Joe Flacco, saying he's one of the best picks the Ravens have ever made. Flacco led them to a victory in Super Bowl XLVII, and the Ravens feel he can return to that level, especially with the help they've added this offseason. But Baltimore has also seen the shift in the NFL toward more mobile quarterbacks, and it's alluring. DeCosta said the Ravens' experience with super-athletic Tyrod Taylor (who backed up Flacco from 2011-2014) also shaped their thinking. A big question regarding Jackson was whether his unique playing style will translate to the NFL. Baltimore has coaches who have seen it work, and could give a more valuable assessment. OC Marty Mornhinweg and QBs Coach James Urban helped Michael Vick have his best season in 2010 in Philadelphia. Urban also coached Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton, who moves around the pocket and scrambles. Assistant HC Greg Roman worked with Colin Kaepernick in San Francisco. The Ravens also fell in love with what everybody loves about Jackson -- his undeniable playmaking ability. At some point, most likely next season, Flacco is going to give way to that.
