Sam Darnold 2020 Outlook
Darnold had a rough second season physically, so rough that he needed surgery early this offseason. He underwent a procedure to repair a ligament in his left thumb, which was an issue for the final two months of the season. Beyond that, he also had injuries to a knee and his ribs, and took a pounding behind an injury-plagued offensive line. He also missed three games after being diagnosed with mononucleosis in September. All told, the 22-year-old played 13 games, going 7-6. He ended up completing 61.9 percent of his passes despite struggling initially upon his return from mono. Overall, as NFL.com's Jeremy Bergman suggested, Darnold hasn’t been the earth-melting quarterback Jets fans viewed him as when the team selected him third overall in the 2018 draft, but the evaluation remains incomplete. He'll need to be better than his 84.3 passer rating from 2019, but, during the Jets' 6-2 run to close out the season, Darnold had 13 touchdown passes against just four interceptions. And in the offseason the Jets took major steps to upgrade both the offensive line and the weapons around him. As Gary Davenport wrote for Bleacher Report: "Darnold's in the best position to succeed since being drafted third overall in 2018. Now he just has to take advantage of it.'
Sam Darnold 2019 Outlook
Darnold and new HC Adam Gase spoke during the hiring process and the young QB was impressed. "He's very fiery," Darnold said of Gase. "I'm really looking forward to hearing his ideas and what he thinks might work best, what he thinks I do well, what we want to utilize in terms of running an offense." According to the New York Daily News, Darnold gave everyone a window into his future with a terrific final month of his first season (he averaged more than 16 fantasy points per game over the final four games). The team's coaching search was centered on finding the right person to help take Darnold to the next level. "He's a great quarterback teacher," Darnold noted. "He was a huge part of Peyton Manning's success in Denver when Peyton broke all those records. I'm really looking forward to working with him and seeing the creativity that he has for offense." Gase’s passion should bring out the best in Darnold and the QB believes that the new coach will inject life into Gang Green's offense. While that might be a low bar, it's still a starting point. The additions of Le'Veon Bell and Jamison Crowder along with the continued development of Robby Anderson and tight end Chris Herndon should add to that.
Sam Darnold 2018 Outlook
The Jets took a step toward improving their quarterback position in April by selecting Darnold, the former USC star, as the No. 3 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. As the Sporting News suggested, Darnold, 20, known as a gunslinger with some mechanics issues, enters New York with the weight of the world on his shoulders. But HC Todd Bowles believes in his rookie QB. In fact, Bowles told reporters during the team's rookie mini-camp that Darnold will have a chance to start this season. Veteran Josh McCown is currently penciled in as the starter, but Darnold will play if he outplays the journeyman in training camp. The Jets have McCown, Teddy Bridgewater and Darnold all fighting for the starting spot, although Bridgewater's roster spot would likely be in jeopardy should he finish third in that battle. While Darnold shouldn't be high on anybody's re-draft radar this season, he's certainly of interest to Dynasty owners, who might even be best served if the youngster spends a season or two watching and learning before finding himself under center on Sundays.
