Sam Darnold 2022 Outlook
Every move the Panthers made this offseason suggests they don't view Darnold as their future. From the pursuit of Deshaun Watson to calling on other potential veterans to meeting with the top QB prospects in the draft to GM Scott Fitterer noting "at some point, you have to take a shot" at drafting a first-round QB, the signs are obvious. Still, Darnold remains -- and he doesn't seem concerned about the Panthers' search and remained confident in his skills. "I have enough security in myself to where I can be like, 'I know I'm a good quarterback. I know I can be a good quarterback in this league. I've proved it,'" the QB said. His stance isn't just understandable. Anything else would be shocking. But as NFL.com suggests, the truth of the matter is that Darnold hasn't been a good quarterback since the Jets made him the No. 3 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. From inconsistent rookie struggles to seeing ghosts to the Jets cutting bait after three years to averaging 1.18 INTs in 11 starts last season, Darnold has been erratic in his four-year career. Yes, there are flashes where it looks like he could be a game-managing quarterback with some pop. But when things break down, he short-circuits, and turnovers and dunderheaded decisions ensue. As a result, his employer has been trying to replace him for months. Fantasy managers should follow suit even if Darnold fends off incoming rookie Matt Corral, added in the third round of April's draft.

Sam Darnold 2021 Outlook
When the Panthers were on the clock with the No. 8 pick in April's NFL Draft, QBs Justin Fields and Mac Jones were still available. However, Carolina went with CB Jaycee Horn in the first round signaling they're comfortable rolling with Darnold under center. According to coach Matt Rhule, it wasn't because he didn’t see bright futures in the QBs who were available, it's that he's confident in where Darnold can take his team. "When we got Sam, knowing he just turned 24, we just felt like Sam plus another player would be better for the team overall," Rhule explained. Darnold showed year-to-year improvement in his first two seasons with a strong finish in Year 2 (as the Jets won six of the last eight games that season). But he struggled for much of last season. For his career Darnold's passing line reads 729-of-1,219 passing (59.8 percent) for 8,097 yards, 45 touchdowns and 39 interceptions and a 78.6 rating. One certainty, playing alongside Christian McCaffrey, D.J. Moore and Robby Anderson (with whom Darnold already has demonstrated some chemistry during their stint together with the Jets), offers the QB a great second chance to get his career off the ground. But he still has to prove himself capable of capitalizing on this opportunity.
