Mark Andrews 2023 Outlook
Andrews came back down to earth last season after a career year in 2021, and his numbers were seemingly at risk of taking another hit when Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson announced on social media that he had requested a trade on March 2. But then Jackson signed a five-year, $260 million extension to become the highest-paid player in franchise history, and just like that, Andrews retained his status as one of the league’s top tight ends. Baltimore did add a couple of weapons in the offseason, though, which could lead to some competition for Andrews. The Ravens signed veteran wideout Odell Beckham Jr. to a one-year deal and drafted receiver Zay Flowers in the first round, while Rashod Bateman also appears to be healthy heading into 2023. With those new offensive pieces, Jackson’s tendency to sometimes rely on his legs instead of using his arm and the chance of J.K. Dobbins and Gus Edwards finally living up to their potential in the backfield, drafting Andrews early comes with a tad of risk. Andrews won’t fall to the wayside of this offense, but if you’re banking on him to put up another 100-reception season with 1,000-plus yards -- like he did two years ago -- you might want to lower your expectations.
Mark Andrews 2022 Outlook
The Ravens took tight ends Charlie Kolar and Isaiah Likely in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft. What does this mean for their offense? Well, with their top wideout, Marquise Brown, shipped off to the Cardinals, leaving a still-unproven Rashod Bateman as their WR1, it probably means a continued reliance on the position. That being the case, it's fair to say Andrews will remain not only the team's top receiving threat, he'll continue to be their top offensive weapon not named Lamar Jackson. ... There's no denying Andrews was incredible last season. He led all tight ends in air yards share and deep targets while finishing top three in routes run, yards per route run, and yards after the catch. That said, Pro Football Network reminds us we need to realize that 2021 was a perfect storm of factors propelling Andrews to his career year -- including some huge weeks when Jackson was injured and his replacements leaned even more heavily on Andrews than Jackson did. But fantasy managers should still expect Andrews to have massive spike weeks and a solid weekly floor. Just acknowledge he probably won't average 17.7 points per game again. He was at 12.2 in 2020 and 13.8 in 2019 -- both top-5 seasons at the position. And given the dearth of high-end options at the position, Andrews still gives you weekly leverage over the field. Don't shy away on draft day.
Mark Andrews 2021 Outlook
The Ravens have seen Andrews develop into one of the best tight ends in football over the last few years and become undoubtedly their most productive receiving threat. Indeed, few tight ends have produced more than Andrews has since 2019, and he remains the preferred target of quarterback Lamar Jackson. As Fansided.com's Justin Fried reminded readers, the 2018 third-round pick leads all Ravens players in receptions, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns over the last two years. No tight end has hauled in more touchdowns than Andrews' 17 since 2019, and only seven players in the entire NFL have recorded more scores over that time frame. The only three tight ends with more yards since 2019 are Travis Kelce, George Kittle, and Darren Waller. Andrews belongs right behind them as the primary target in Baltimore's passing game. The question is, will that role change following the additions of Sammy Watkins, Rashod Bateman and Tylan Wallace in the offseason? Expecting the Ravens to spread the ball around more isn't entirely unreasonable. But expecting Jackson to make a total shift away from Andrews seems like a huge reach. In fact, believing Andrews will continue to be the most heavily targeted Raven still seems like the most likely outcome here.
