D.J. Chark 2023 Outlook
Another season, another transition to a new season for Chark, who joins Carolina following his lone season at Detroit, when he contributed to a precision passing game that nearly helped the Lions rally for a playoff berth. Interestingly, Chark’s top effort as a Lion came against the team he now is joining, as he had four catches for 108 yards in a Week 16 loss at Carolina. An ankle injury sidelined Chark for nearly two months, but he didn’t take long to round back into form, notching games of 98 and 94 yards two weeks before the breakthrough against the Panthers. Quarterback Bryce Young, selected with the top pick, will be expected to take the reins sooner than later, although veteran acquisition Andy Dalton could get the call as starter to open the season. Whatever the case, Chark, still just 26, will have the chance to keep climbing for a franchise that also wants to rise. He joins Carolina as an outside threat to accompany another former NFC North player in ex-Minnesota Viking Adam Thielen.
D.J. Chark 2022 Outlook
With the Jaguars choosing to spend big on outside talent to rebuild their receiving corps, Chark was no longer in their plans. So, the Lions jumped in and agreed to terms with Chark on a one-year deal worth a reported $10 million fully guaranteed. A one-year deal seems wise after Chark was limited to just four games in 2021 due to a fractured ankle. He's missed 16 regular-season games the past two years combined. But a healthy Chark has proven to be a play-making threat. He's got great hands. He can separate from defenders and at 6-3, he's capable of making contested catches when he doesn't get that separation. All of that makes Chark a great complement to Amon-Ra St. Brown. While St. Brown and T.J. Hockenson will continue to get their fair share of the workload, Chark is in position to garner a target share that keeps him fantasy relevant. Some of that depends on incoming rookie Jameson Williams' return from a torn ACL. But if Chark gets opportunities, it'll be on him to show the upside that's intrigued fantasy managers in the past. Remember: Chark earned a Pro Bowl bid in 2019 when he went for a career-high 1,008 yards and eight TDs on 73 catches. He's more than just a flier here. Chark is a value pick who could easily outperform expectations.
D.J. Chark 2021 Outlook
As USA Today put it, "Chark is quickly developing into a receiver who is simply unfair." The young pass-catcher already had excellent ball skills and a large frame for a No. 1 receiver, and now, according to a report from the NFL Network's James Palmer, he's gained 10 pounds, putting his weight at 210. However, don't expect the extra muscle to slow him down. Palmer said on Twitter that in spite of the weight increase, Chark has actually gotten faster this offseason. A bigger, faster Chark is a scary thought for the AFC South and the NFL at large. With the Jaguars’ issues at quarterback in 2020, Chark struggled. After cracking 1,000 yards for the first time in 2019, his totals fell off across the board. Still, he's one of the top young receivers in the league in spite of barely average quarterback play during his time in Jacksonville. Possible downside? As ESPN's Mike Clay pointed out, Chark's target volume could be in jeopardy with Laviska Shenault Jr. entering Year 2, and with Marvin Jones Jr., Phillip Dorsett and Jamal Agnew added to the fold. Nonetheless, Chark investors are getting WR1 upside at WR3 prices.
