D'Ernest Johnson 2023 Outlook
The date: Thursday, Oct. 21, 2021. The scene: A middling “Thursday Night Football” matchup pitting the Denver Broncos against the host Cleveland Browns. Nick Chubb is hurt. Kareem Hunt is hurt. Johnson is the Browns’ starting running back. And he breaks his first run for 20 yards before going on to compile 146 yards and a touchdown, running his way into fantasy owners’ hearts. Johnson had two more decent fantasy showings the rest of the season, but in 2022 he was the clear third fiddle -- maybe fourth, as rookie Jerome Ford doubled him up in carries (eight). The change of scenery could help resuscitate Johnson’s fantasy stock. The Jacksonville Jaguars’ RB2 spot behind Travis Etienne is not settled, with James Robinson out and incumbent JaMycal Hasty fighting with rookie Tank Bigsby and Johnson for time. It’s hard to see any of those three truly cutting into Etienne’s workload after Etienne gained 1,125 yards on 5.1 per carry in his first healthy NFL season. But Johnson could pick up just enough goal-line touches or receptions in Jacksonville to become a viable flex play some weeks.

D'Ernest Johnson 2022 Outlook
Johnson is a restricted free agent, and the Browns tendered an offer to him worth $2.4 million. ... It was just a few years ago that he was working on a fishing boat after going undrafted to make ends meet. He also put in his time in the AFL, rushing for 372 yards and adding 22 receptions for 220 yards. And Johnson was very much on the roster bubble heading into the season, with Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt holding down the top two spots on the depth chart and rookie Demetric Felton emerging as a threat in the passing game. However, Johnson capitalized on his opportunities and proved to be a valuable insurance policy in 2021 as he took over as the lead back in three games while Chubb and Hunt dealt with injuries. In those games Johnson put up: 146 rushing yards and a touchdown against the Broncos in Week 7; 99 rushing yards against the Patriots in Week 10; and 123 rushing yards and a touchdown against the Bengals in Week 18. All told, Johnson delivered 534 yards on 100 carries with three touchdowns. He also collected 19 receptions for 137 yards. That is a nice security blanket to have in case something happens to Chubb or Hunt as the Browns would not have to worry about the season going off the rails with Johnson in the backfield.
