Justin Jackson 2021 Outlook
The issue for fantasy managers looking to invest in a Chargers running back not named Austin Ekeler is obvious: There is no clear No. 2. It was expected that Joshua Kelley or Jackson would assume that role last season, but that didn't happen because both running backs struggled. Kelley was terrific in his first two games of the season, then was derailed after fumbling in consecutive weeks. He got his touches cut while Jackson was hampered by the injury bug. This is a new coaching staff, so Kelley will get another chance to prove himself. Jackson had a better ending of 2020, but does he fit new offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi's system? According to SI.com, that will be the real question. Worth noting, the Bolts weren't very good in short-yardage running situations, which is why the since-departed Kalen Ballage saw significant time last year. If Jackson (or Kelley) could demonstrate some power, it could change their trajectory in this offense. But until or unless that happens, both players remain outside the range of draftable commodities in all but the deepest leagues or as late-round fliers in best-ball formats. And even that seems like a reach.
Justin Jackson 2020 Outlook
The Chargers entered the 2019 season without Melvin Gordon on the active roster, as the star runner was engaged in an ill-advised holdout attempt to squeeze a long-term deal out of the club. The Chargers will enter the 2020 campaign without either Gordon or backfield-mate Philip Rivers. First man up to replace Gordon is obviously Austin Ekeler, the dual-threat back coming off a career year. Beyond that, it's fair to speculate whether Jackson or newcomer Joshua Kelley will be the thunder to Ekeler's lightning. As SI.com reminded readers, last season Jackson started off well before injuring his calf ahead of Week 4 posting 6-57, 7-59 and 5-26 numbers in those three games. And game flow will be an issue for whomever wins that complementary role behind Ekeler, whether it's Jackson or Kelley. The distinction of "starter" has long been a foreign concept when it comes to Chargers running backs, but right now Jackson's role feels less defined than that of Ekeler's or Kelley's. As CBSSports.com suggested, Jackson could become more of an afterthought on offense if Kelley lives up to expectations, even though the latter might ultimately see less time on the field to begin the season. HC Anthony Lynn seems to favor the rookie over Jackson; we have to concur.
