Phillip Lindsay 2021 Outlook
Lindsay agreed to a one-year deal with the Texans worth $3.25 million with $1 million guaranteed. Lindsay joins veterans David Johnson and Mark Ingram (along with Buddy Howell and Dontrell Hilliard) on Houston's depth chart. The Texans' running game of Johnson and backup Duke Johnson struggled in 2020, ranking last in the NFL in Football Outsiders' DVOA. Lindsay, who made the Broncos' roster as an undrafted free agent in 2018, rushed for 1,037 yards and nine touchdowns in his rookie season. He was also selected to the Pro Bowl. He followed that up with another 1,000-yard season in 2019, rushing for 1,011 yards and seven touchdowns. Despite his success, the Broncos signed running back Melvin Gordon to a two-year, $16 million contract in free agency the following offseason. Lindsay’s production dipped to 502 yards and a touchdown in 2020 due to the new timeshare and a combination of injuries that ultimately landed him on injured reserve. Now that Lindsay finds himself in a three-way split, fantasy managers are going to have a difficult time assessing value in advance of the season -- an issue that will likely continue well into the season.
Phillip Lindsay 2020 Outlook
Lindsay enters his third offense in as many seasons with the Broncos. After back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons under his previous coordinators, Lindsay believes Pat Shurmur's offense fits him even better than the previous two. "I think it's gonna be simpler for us to learn," Lindsay said. "And I think it's going to be aggressive. I just think that it's what fits my style, and I've been able to adapt to every style, but I think that this style right here is something that is going to fit me, kind of like how my rookie year was. I'm excited about that." As NFL.com notes, it's an interesting comment from Lindsay given that it's the same feeling newly signed RB Melvin Gordon expressed. It's also noteworthy to consider that reports from Denver indicate that the team's brass believes Gordon better fits Shurmur's scheme. Remember, Lindsay dealt with off-season wrist surgery in February but has since said he's fully healthy. Whenever the Broncos get back to work, expect a motivated Lindsay to show up with a sizable chip on his shoulder, ready to scrap for every snap. How Shurmur will balance his two running backs should be a hot topic in Denver whenever training camps get under way.
