Kalen Ballage 2019 Outlook
As USA Today noted, the Dolphins got some promising glimpses of Ballage last year. The 131st pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, Ballage was pent up behind running backs Frank Gore and Kenyan Drake for the majority of last season. That is, of course, until Gore went down with a few weeks remaining and Ballage became the de facto backup. In 12 games, Ballage had 36 rushes for 191 yards and a touchdown, while catching nine passes for 56 yards. That includes a 75-yard run against the Vikings in Week 15. Looking ahead to 2019 it has been widely assumed that Kenyan Drake will be Miami's primary back and starter -- and rightfully so. Drake has all the needed talent to be an effective starting running back and can stay on the field for all three downs. But Ballage isn't conceding the job. "I'm a competitor. That's what I do; that's who I am," Ballage recently said. "I'm going forward and ready to do my thing." So, while it may be a bit of a stretch to say there's a full-blown competition for the starting role, it might not be a slam dunk, open and shut case for Drake. Ballage certainly isn't thinking that way and he is expectingmore chances this season.
Kalen Ballage 2018 Outlook
The Dolphins showed a lot of faith in Kenyan Drake this offseason, and he looks to be the leader of their backfield with veteran Frank Gore also in the mix. But NFL.com believes that fantasy fans in dynasty leagues might still want to keep tabs on how Ballage looks in camp. Gore’s career is definitely winding down, which could open up a chance for Ballage not too far down the line. According to Rookie Scouting Portfolio author Matt Waldman, Ballage's size, strength, speed, and receiving ability entice fantasy owners and teams. He has to work on varying his footwork and recognizing when to do so when reading the blocking scheme and the defensive keys. Beginning his career in a gap-heavy scheme like Miami’s is good because his footwork doesn't need to be as advanced. Ballage could etch out a role in the not too distant future.
