Nyheim Hines 2022 Outlook
As Profootballtalk.com pointed out, the Colts have had a revolving door at quarterback over the last four seasons and that's had a big impact on Hines. The speedy complementary back caught 63 passes playing with Andrew Luck in 2018, but dropped to 44 after Luck's retirement the next year. He was back up to 63 catches after Philip Rivers joined the team in 2020 and then back down to 40 catches with Carson Wentz last year. It looks like he's a good bet to continue that pattern in 2022. FantasyPros notes that Hines struggled to see the ball last season with Jonathan Taylor dominating the offense. Hines remains a dual threat out of the backfield and could be worth rostering if he sees his situation change. Colts offensive coordinator Marcus Brady noted Matt Ryan's fondness for throwing to running backs, and Ryan singled out Hines as a player he's looking forward to playing with in his first season in Indianapolis. "I think he's got really good speed, I think he's got great hands, catches the ball effortlessly," Ryan said. "I think he's got ability to get in and out of cuts that is special. I think he's going to be a nice tool for us to find ways to use this season." The Colts still have some things to figure out at wide receiver, but it seems any configuration of their passing game will include a lot of room for Hines to make plays out of the backfield.
Nyheim Hines 2021 Outlook
In his first season with the Colts, Hines set the rookie record for the most receptions by a player in franchise history -- regardless of position. As 24/7Sports.com reminded readers, Hines hasn't slowed down in the two years since, and set new records for a Year 3 running back in Indy. During his first three seasons, Hines has corralled 170 receptions for 1,227 yards and six touchdowns. That puts him ahead of two of the best running backs in NFL history, as Marshall Faulk (164) and Edgerrin James (149) are just behind him on the list. That proves just how reliable Hines has been as a pass-catcher out of the backfield. Hines has never been relied upon as an every-down back, but he's typically a second or third option on passing downs when the offense spreads out. Last season was Hines' most productive, compiling 862 yards combined on the ground and through the air. The former NC State tailback also set new career-highs for carries (89), rushing yards (380), receptions (63), receiving yards (482) and total touchdowns (seven) in a single season. Drafting him with the expectation he'll continue producing at a similar level isn't a reach.
