Rashaad Penny 2022 Outlook
Penny is returning to the Seahawks on a one-year prove-it deal after a stellar finish to an injury-plagued first 3½ seasons in the NFL. In fact, Penny finished the 2021 season with one of the most prolific rushing stretches in Seahawks history. With Chris Carson on injured reserve, Penny led the NFL with 671 rushing yards -- 208 yards more than anyone else -- over the final five games. In addition, he ran for a career-best 190 yards in the season finale. He scored six rushing touchdowns over those final five games -- one more than he scored over his first 32 regular-season games. To that point, Penny's career had been marred by a long list of injuries, including a torn ACL in December 2019 (just as he was starting to break out) that sidelined him for much of 2020. He also missed five games after injuring a calf in the 2021 opener and another game in November because of a pulled hamstring. Now, with Russell Wilson shipped off to Denver and with Carson's future uncertain coming off season-ending neck surgery, the Seahawks need Penny's explosiveness to take the pressure off new QB Drew Lock. Given his history, there will be skeptics -- especially withy Kenneth Walker II, one of the top backs in this year's draft, in the fold. Still, smart fantasy managers will leverage all that if it offers sufficient draft-day value.
Rashaad Penny 2021 Outlook
The Seahawks drafted Penny in the first round in 2018, but he played only three games last season while continuing to recover from a knee injury. He underwent a cleanup procedure on the same knee this offseason. "He had a serious knee injury," Carroll said after Penny was held out of OTAs and the team's June minicamp. "Sometimes it just takes [a second] year to get back. Just the cleanup stuff and what he's ready to take on right now, he can run full speed. We just want to make sure that his strength is balanced out in his quads." Still, teammate Chris Carson believes he and Penny can form a strong tandem. "I think we can be one of the top rushing duos in the league," Carson said. "We both bring a different feel to the game, but we complement each other so well." Carson's 12 100-yard games since 2018 are fifth-most in the NFL, but after back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons, he rushed for only 681 in 12 games last season. The Seahawks were 2-2 in the four games Carson missed with a foot injury. Neither Carson nor Penny ever has played a full, 16-game schedule. The team hopes both can make it through a full, 17-game season this season.
Rashaad Penny 2020 Outlook
One day, Chris Carson and Penny will be healthy and thriving at the same time. One day. ... The Seahawks have a potentially devastating one-two punch in the backfield in Carson and Penny, but the players are not cooperating. Penny tore his ACL last season just as he seemed to be finding a groove alongside Carson. In fact, the injury came on the heels of two 100-total-yard performances. Carson then fractured his hip two weeks later. The dynamic duo's simultaneous setbacks forced Seattle to pull Marshawn Lynch and Robert Turbin off the street as the team prepared for the postseason. This year, they signed Carlos Hyde as insurance behind Carson until Penny is able to hit the field. HC Pete Carroll said that Penny's ACL surgery also cleaned up some other issues but added the young running back was already ahead of schedule. Getting back on the bike less than two months after surgery is a good sign, but there are many more steps for Penny to take before the start of the season. The former first-round pick will be one to monitor as we get closer to the 2020 campaign, as he could be a candidate to start the season on the PUP list if he's not ready by Week 1.
