Rashaad Penny 2023 Outlook
What a strange and disappointing pro career Penny has had thus far. College football fans will remember Penny as a 2,000-yard rusher and Heisman candidate at San Diego State before the Seattle Seahawks made him a late-first-round pick in 2018. An ACL tear and a supporting role behind Chris Carson kept Penny out of the spotlight until late in the 2021 -- that tearfully beautiful five-game stretch when he decimated defenses with six touchdowns and an average of 7.3 yards per carry, aided by several long runs. After another tough injury setback in 2022, this time a fractured fibula, closed a difficult chapter in Seattle, can Penny become his best self in a Philadelphia Eagles uniform? Some fantasy owners certainly hope so. If D’Andre Swift fails to catch on early, we can see Penny getting a chance to start games. Either way, Doug Pederson should be eager to use him, and the Eagles’ offensive scheme should be kind to Penny’s skillset. He likely won’t help much as a pass-catcher or goal-line back, though.
Rashaad Penny 2022 Outlook
Penny is returning to the Seahawks on a one-year prove-it deal after a stellar finish to an injury-plagued first 3½ seasons in the NFL. In fact, Penny finished the 2021 season with one of the most prolific rushing stretches in Seahawks history. With Chris Carson on injured reserve, Penny led the NFL with 671 rushing yards -- 208 yards more than anyone else -- over the final five games. In addition, he ran for a career-best 190 yards in the season finale. He scored six rushing touchdowns over those final five games -- one more than he scored over his first 32 regular-season games. To that point, Penny's career had been marred by a long list of injuries, including a torn ACL in December 2019 (just as he was starting to break out) that sidelined him for much of 2020. He also missed five games after injuring a calf in the 2021 opener and another game in November because of a pulled hamstring. Now, with Russell Wilson shipped off to Denver and with Carson's future uncertain coming off season-ending neck surgery, the Seahawks need Penny's explosiveness to take the pressure off new QB Drew Lock. Given his history, there will be skeptics -- especially withy Kenneth Walker II, one of the top backs in this year's draft, in the fold. Still, smart fantasy managers will leverage all that if it offers sufficient draft-day value.
Rashaad Penny 2021 Outlook
The Seahawks drafted Penny in the first round in 2018, but he played only three games last season while continuing to recover from a knee injury. He underwent a cleanup procedure on the same knee this offseason. "He had a serious knee injury," Carroll said after Penny was held out of OTAs and the team's June minicamp. "Sometimes it just takes [a second] year to get back. Just the cleanup stuff and what he's ready to take on right now, he can run full speed. We just want to make sure that his strength is balanced out in his quads." Still, teammate Chris Carson believes he and Penny can form a strong tandem. "I think we can be one of the top rushing duos in the league," Carson said. "We both bring a different feel to the game, but we complement each other so well." Carson's 12 100-yard games since 2018 are fifth-most in the NFL, but after back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons, he rushed for only 681 in 12 games last season. The Seahawks were 2-2 in the four games Carson missed with a foot injury. Neither Carson nor Penny ever has played a full, 16-game schedule. The team hopes both can make it through a full, 17-game season this season.
