Derrius Guice 2020 Outlook
Two months after a second season-ending knee injury, Guice was well aware of the perception that has formed over the first two years of his pro career: He's injury-prone. The former LSU star wants to prove differently. "I've been a practice all-American so far," Guice said early this year. "I'm trying to bring that to the field. ..." Since the 2018 second-rounder was drafted, he's had three knee injuries -- two surgeries -- and appeared in only five games. When he played, he averaged 5.8 yards per carry, which makes it natural to want to see him more often. But he ended his 2019 season where he spent his rookie year: on injured reserve. Under HC Ron Rivera, the Redskins added new trainer Ryan Vermillion and Guice said the two have been at the team's facility all offseason. Guice also said he was "happy" with the progress of his rehab and how his body felt and anticipates being 100 percent healthy. But there will be many -- Guice included -- who won't be happy until the running back makes it through a full season. "I just gotta keep elevating and moving forward," Guice said. While he faces ample competition in Washington, a healthy Guice has the talent to push for high-end RB2 fantasy production in 2020.
Derrius Guice 2019 Outlook
It was last August when Guice's rookie season ended on only his sixth carry of the Redskins' pre-season opener. So, how's the running back's rehab from his torn ACL going? As NFL.com recently noted, Guice is running at full speed again. Last year's second-round pick underwent a string of additional operations to quell an infection -- concerning stuff, to be sure -- but Guice is viewed internally as Washington's bell cow. HC Jay Gruden believes the former LSU star will be ready for September and told ESPN's Matthew Berry, "He doesn't have to come off the field on third down," noting the team loved what Guice showed as a pass catcher before the injury. That is notable, with Chris Thompson heading into his contract campaign. Assuming he's healthy, Guice appears to be on tap to absorb the 270-plus touches Adrian Peterson saw last season. Peterson will return, however, and Thompson should be at full speed from day 1 this summer (the team also added Bryce Love, coming off an ACL he tore in February, in April's draft). So, Guice's path to a full workload isn't entirely clear. But if he returns to his pre-injury form, it's going to be very hard for the Redskins to keep him off the field.
Derrius Guice 2018 Outlook
Guice slid in the NFL Draft, but ended up landing in a nice spot for his future fantasy value. And to be fair, getting picked in the second round isn't a huge fall. But the fact that Guice, who may have been punished for complaining about questions asked during the pre-draft process, was widely viewed as a top-20 pick prior to the draft made his slide seem more precipitous. Rookie Scouting Portfolio author Matt Waldman's assessment seems dead on here: "If Guice's maturity is a real problem, it will make sense to hold tight on Samaje Perine and Chris Thompson. If it's NFL engaging in petty behavior, Guice can start and thrive immediately in Washington." Whatever the case, it's hard to imagine Guice won't play immediately given his talent, but his hard running style probably lends itself to fewer snaps. The Redskins want to limit Chris Thompson's snaps coming off a broken leg in an effort to keep him fresh as their elite third-down back. Beyond that, the Redskins clearly weren't sold on Samaje Perine or Rob Kelley, so expecting Guice to quickly earn a prominent early-down role is reasonable. Indeed, even if Thompson's presence somewhat limits the newcomer's appeal in PPR formats, NFL.com expects the LSU product to lead the Redskins in carries as a rookie. We do, too.
