Austin Ekeler 2023 Outlook
Austin Ekeler wanted to be paid like one of the best running backs in the league. At $6.125 million per year, he wasn’t close to the top 10. Ekeler requested a trade from the Los Angeles Chargers in March, but come May he agreed to a revised contract that added $1.75 million in incentives for 2023, the final season of his current deal. With his contract status settled for the short term, Ekeler brings the Chargers (and fantasy owners) high-end value as a dual-threat back that few players not named McCaffrey can touch. He’s a PPR godsend; his career-high 107 receptions tied CeeDee Lamb for fifth among all players in 2022. Even if you don’t expect him to crack 100 ever again, he’s averaged a little more than 80 catches per year in his four seasons as the Chargers’ featured back (2019-22). Ekeler accounted for more than a quarter of the team’s yards from scrimmage last year, so Los Angeles would have a terrible time trying to replace that production, now or later. There’s no need to worry about Joshua Kelley or Isaiah Spiller taking away too many of Ekeler’s carries.
Austin Ekeler 2022 Outlook
NFL.com put it like this: "Can we quit with the questions about whether Ekeler can handle a full-time workload?" It's a fair question. He's certainly capable of being a workhorse. But is that really desirable? Ekeler openly advocates for limiting his touches to remain healthy for the entire NFL season. Speaking early this offseason, Ekeler -- an avid fantasy football manager -- said, "You can even go ask my management, like, 'Hey, make sure you limit my touches, like you got to make sure I can get through the entire season.'" For the record, last year was his first season of more than 200 carries (12.87 per game). He saw 50 percent of the Chargers' rushing attempts in 2021, a far smaller share than most starting backs. But it's the passing game where Ekeler excels. Last year he commanded a 16 percent target share in LA's offense. The benefits of managing Ekeler's workload are evident: He missed only one game in 2021, posted over 1,500 combo yards, and scored a whopping 20 touchdowns. And the Chargers have said they want to reduce his workload even further in 2022. With Justin Jackson, Joshua Kelley and Larry Rountree III coming up short as complements to Ekeler, incoming rookie Isaiah Spiller could be capable of producing at a level that might limit Ekeler. Nonetheless, you're going to have to expend some high-end draft capital to secure his services.
Austin Ekeler 2021 Outlook
Limited by a hamstring injury suffered in Week 4, Ekeler played in just 10 games in 2020, seeing his production dwindle from 1,550 scrimmage yards in 2019 to 933 last season. Now healthy and entering a new offense under coordinator Joe Lombardi, Ekeler views himself as a chess piece the OC can use, similar to how the Saints get the ball to Alvin Kamara. "I think that's something that I've learned about Joe coming in like this man is going to get his playmakers in space and situations where they can be successful," Ekeler said of the former Saints OC. "I think you see that as far as the running back position with Kamara with the Saints. They would give him the ball any way they could, and he was making plays. And it just depends on me, right?" The backfield in L.A. remains roughly the same as last season, with the do-it-all Ekeler leading the way ahead of Justin Jackson and Joshua Kelley. The club did add Larry Rountree III in the sixth round of the draft. It's a diverse backfield, but Ekeler fits best with how Lombardi prefers to use his backs, particularly in the passing game. If Ekeler stays healthy, expect him to return to his 1,200-plus scrimmage-yard ways.
