Chris Godwin 2020 Outlook
Godwin burst onto the scene last season as a highly productive component in Bruce Arians' offensive system. Godwin thrived in the aerial attack as he played opposite star Mike Evans. The Buccaneers ranked third in the league in yards per game and tied for third in points per game last season with Jameis Winston at quarterback. Like Evans, Godwin was the top-scoring wideout twice and was finished in the top 20 five times. However, he also ranked outside of the top 30 in seven of his 14 games. Still, Godwin finished second in fantasy points per game (19.7) among wide receivers. He also averaged a solid 15.5 yards per catch, which led all wideouts with at least 80 receptions. This offseason, the Buccaneers signed Tom Brady in free agency and traded for Rob Gronkowski, coaxing him out of retirement. The new additions should afford more opportunities for Godwin, who is a versatile route runner capable of working across the formation. He has the talent to line up in the slot and catch passes over the middle of the field. With Brady in the fold, Godwin has a chance to develop into a dominant intermediate receiver that thrives. He figures to be selected in the second round likely ahead of Evans in most cases.
Chris Godwin 2019 Outlook
Many things will be different for Godwin this season. He has a new coaching staff and a new playbook, a new teammate at receiver, and most importantly, a new role in this offense. And just because it's different doesn't mean it's such a bad situation for Godwin. He is moving into an expanded role as the Bucs’ No. 2 receiver, and should also get more snaps inside at the slot. The latter change could very well lead to a higher number of catches and an increase in overall production. Remember, Godwin will be playing a similar role to that of future Hall of Fame receiver Larry Fitzgerald’s in the new Bucs' offense under HC Bruce Arians. In his final three seasons under Arians in Arizona, Fitzgerald finished as fantasy’s WR7, WR11 and then WR4 in 2017. Godwin significantly improved from his rookie season to his second year, compiling 59 receptions for 842 yards and seven touchdowns last season. Part of the reason for his expanded role now is because of the departures of DeSean Jackson and Adam Humphries, moves that were easier for the Bucs to make knowing what type of production they expect from Godwin. Adding to the fun, the Bucs are going to be a pass-first offense. Expect a full breakout this fall.
