Gerald Everett 2019 Outlook
Fantasy owners continue to wait for the breakout, but it's not clear one is coming any time soon as Everett continues to share the workload with Tyler Higbee. And even though Everett seems to be the more likely fantasy producer of the two, nobody should be getting their hopes up. As USA Today put it, "Everett has shown flashes, but they've been nothing more than flashes." In his second season, Everett topped 30 yards just three times and didn't top 50 yards in a game all season. As CBSSports.com noted, last year, Everett only had one game with double digits in PPR points. Neither Everett nor Higbee caught a pass in the Super Bowl -- in fact neither of them was even targeted despite Jared Goff attempting 38 passes. That seems to suggest that HC Sean McVay doesn’t have very much confidence in either player, and the Rams need a tight end they can count on. McVay came up in the league as the Redskins' tight ends coach and got great production out of Jordan Reed in Washington, so he knows how to use the position. Bottom line? Banking on a breakout season for Everett in an offense that views him as an afterthought (and with a receiving corps led by Brandin Cooks, Robert Woods and Cooper Kupp, being an afterthought is sort of understandable) is a fool's errand.
Gerald Everett 2018 Outlook
According to the Sports Xchange, the Rams want more from their tight ends moving forward, especially since 2016 draft-pick Tyler Higbee did not distinguish himself with only 25 catches for 295 yards last year. Drafted in the second round of 2017 to be the Rams' mismatch receiving option at tight end, Everett came out of South Alabama further behind the learning curve as a receiver than many anticipated. He flashed potential during his rookie season with 16 catches for 244 yards, and was effective after the catch, but he dropped far too many of his 32 targets. As Bleacher Report noted, Everett wasn't used much as a blocker, as he was severely undersized. (It is worth noting that Higbee is a capable blocker.) All that said, even though Everett has a long ways to go before he becomes the next Zach Ertz or Jordan Reed, the Rams expect continued development in his second campaign. For their part, B/R believes Everett has all the tools and talent to eventually get there.
