Mike Williams 2023 Outlook
Staying healthy is always a major concern with Williams, who has played a full campaign just once in six NFL seasons. He is productive when healthy and has topped 1,000 receiving yards twice as well as catching at least 85 passes in each of the past four seasons. True to form, he missed four regular-season games due to injury in 2022 and also sat out the post-season loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars due to a back injury sustained in Week 18. Williams has put up touchdown receiving seasons of 10 in 2018 and nine in 2021 but has only found the end zone 11 times in his other four seasons. You would expect more consistent figures with gunner Justin Herbert throwing the ball his way. Williams had three 100-yard outings in a four-game span early last season when he was fully healthy and only topped the mark once the remainder of the season. He had 25 receptions in those three outings, roughly 40 percent of his season output. Yardage-wise, he had less than 20 yards in three of the first six games.
Mike Williams 2022 Outlook
The Chargers kept Williams from testing his value as an unrestricted free agent by signing him to a three-year, $60 million contract in early March. The deal includes $40 million guaranteed at signing, per Rapoport. Fortunately, Williams put together his most compete season at the right time. Playing on a fifth-year option of $15.7 million for the Chargers, Williams caught 76 passes -- eclipsing his previous career-high by 27 -- for 1,146 yards and nine touchdowns. He had a mid-season lull but was also working through a knee issue. Having receiver Keenan Allen on the other side helps as does the presence of a rising start at quarterback in Justin Herbert, but Williams set himself up for this hefty payday just before the deadline to apply the franchise tag and before he hit the open market. Bottom line? This is the best possible outcome for Williams, Herbert and the Chargers, who will continue to boast one of the top starting tandems in the NFL, in general. And if Williams continues to build on his impressive 2021 effort -- especially if he can produce at the level he did over the first half of last season over the course of a full campaign, fantasy managers will be big winners as well.
Mike Williams 2021 Outlook
The Chargers need to start getting more out of Williams. Only nine wide receivers in the NFL are scheduled to have a larger cap hit in 2021 than he is. His $15.68-million number is the result of the Chargers exercising the fifth-year option of his rookie contract. According to the L.A. Times, the personal windfall means Williams will have a higher salary this season than Jarvis Landry, DeAndre Hopkins and Michael Thomas. Williams had one 1,000-yard season and another 10-touchdown season and is one of the league's best at going over defensive backs to win 50/50 balls. But there's plenty of room for Williams to be more productive and consistent after a 2020 season in which he disappeared at times. Averaging slightly more than three receptions per game, Williams became even less of a downfield threat than Jalen Guyton and Tyron Johnson, both of whom possess the speed to stress secondaries. Still, neither has the same imposing, physical presence that Williams brings to the table. With a brand new coaching staff and with Justin Herbert coming off his NFL Rookie of the Year performance, there's reason to hope Williams rebounds this fall. Remember, the departure of Hunter Henry will open up some targets as well, and Williams should benefit.
