Chris Carson 2020 Outlook
Carson avoided surgery on his fractured hip, but HC Pete Carroll told reporters in February that even though the running back was making progress he couldn't do much at that point. Still, the Seahawks expect him to be ready for the 2020 season. Carson’s 2019 campaign ended prematurely in Week 16 against the Cardinals but he managed to finish his third season with a career-high 278 carries for a career-high 1,230 yards and tied his career-high with nine total touchdowns. Along the way, he averaged 15.5 fantasy points while ranking 12th in total points at the position. As NFL.com notes, Carson didn't have any top-5 finishes, but he did rank as the between sixth and tenth five times (33.3 percent of his games). With Rashaad Penny coming off his own serious injury and questionable to even start the regular season, Carson could be well-positioned to pay early dividends in Seattle's run-first offense -- even with the addition of free agent Carlos Hyde. In fact, as the newcomer said in his introductory press conference: "It's probably an open competition for that second. Me personally, I don't think there's probably an open competition for the starting role. I think everybody knows who the starting running back is for Seattle, and that's Carson." We agree.
Chris Carson 2019 Outlook
The Seahawks led the league in rushing last year, averaging a healthy 160 yards per game, thanks to the contributions of Carson, Mike Davis and then-rookie Rashaad Penny, the team's first-round pick in 2018. Carson led the team while Penny capped off his rookie season with 419 yards rushing on 85 carries. With Davis moving on this offseason, HC Pete Carroll is counting on Carson and Penny for the 2019 season. "One-two punch and I don't know who's one or who's two," Carroll said. ... For fantasy owners, Carson's emergence came as somewhat of a surprise given Penny's lofty draft status. But a training camp injury hindered Penny and also opened the door for Carson to shine. "It's the first time Chris has really had the opportunity to play a whole season all the way through and show what he's all about," Carroll said. "His style was great and (we) loved the way he played." Carson, a physical runner, and Penny, a speedster and capable receiver out of the backfield, complement each other well. And with the team’s successful, very run-heavy approach in 2018 behind an improved offensive line, Carroll isn't in any hurry to change how the Seahawks operate. So, expect Carson to be the "one" in that "one-two punch" until Penny proves otherwise.
