Aaron Jones 2023 Outlook
From Aaron Rodgers’ new teammate to his old friend. Jones is still humming along, likely powering ahead for a 5-yard gain as we speak. He eclipsed 1,000 yards for the third time in four seasons, and he remains a threat in the passing game, hauling in a career-high 59 catches last year. But the man who averaged one rushing touchdown per game in 2019 has combined to score six rushing touchdowns in his last two seasons, including a career-low two last year. The Packers relied more on burly No. 2 back AJ Dillon, who received far more touches inside the 10- and 5-yard lines than Jones did last year. This is mainly why Jones is no longer RB1 material as he approaches 29 years old: You can take Jones, but you’ll almost definitely want to handcuff him to Dillon. That said, Jones still has tremendous value in Jordan Love’s first full season as Green Bay’s starting quarterback. He’ll want a reliable runner to hand it off to and a dependable check-down option coming out of the backfield.
Aaron Jones 2022 Outlook
While the trade sending Davante Adams to Las Vegas leaves us wondering about the Packers' wideouts, there are no questions about the running back room -- at least from an NFL perspective. From a fantasy perspective? It's getting more difficult to divine. ... Speaking from the NFL Scouting Combine, coach Matt LaFleur boasted about the versatility both Jones and A.J. Dillon bring to the offense. "We're fortunate, we've got two No. 1 backs," LaFleur said. "They both offer a little bit something different. ... Obviously they can run the football at a very high level, but just their contributions in the passing game. Whether it's in protection, whether it's receiving out of the backfield, whether it's lining them out wide. I think both of those guys are very versatile, and that's an important part to our offense." Jones has proven to be one of the most explosive backs in the NFL, netting 799 yards on 171 carries with four touchdowns in 15 games in 2021, adding 391 yards and six more scores on 52 catches. Dillion, meanwhile, became a force in his own right in Year 2, leading the Packers with 803 rushing yards with five TDs on 187 carries. Given all this, it's no surprise to see Jones' draft stock dropping. We'll suggest Adams' departure puts Jones in position to become Rodgers' most-trusted receiving threat in the red zone. And that keeps him ahead of Dillon for us.
Aaron Jones 2021 Outlook
Sometimes the best move is to make no move at all. ... In two years in coach Matt LaFleur's balanced offense, which is predicated on a strong running game that sets up a dangerous play-action downfield passing game, Jones has put up back-to-back 1,000-yard rushing seasons, tied for the NFL lead in total touchdowns in 2019 with 19 and has averaged over 1,500 yards from scrimmage and 15 total touchdowns over that span. Despite missing two games with a calf injury in 2020, Jones set a career high for rushing yards and matched a career best in yards per carry (5.5). Over the past two years, he's averaged 266.5 touches per season and played an average of 601 snaps. Now he returns to Green Bay with a nice new contract and without competition from Jamaal Williams, who moved on to Detroit. As ESPN's Matthew Berry notes, there have been four games in the past two years when Jones played and Williams didn’t. In those games, Jones averaged 22.8 points a game, 21.3 touches a game and 128 scrimmage yards. While A.J. Dillon remains a factor, the youngster is no threat to cut into Jones' receiving role (and over the past two years, Jones averaged 23.1 points per game in games when he caught four-plus passes). Consider Jones a locked-in top-10 fantasy RB.
