Jamaal Williams 2023 Outlook
Kamara being suspended to start the season would boost Jamaal Williams’ value on draft boards. The New Orleans Saints could also view that early-season stretch as an audition period for third-round draft pick Kendre Miller, but they signed Williams for a reason. He is coming off a career year with the Detroit Lions that included an NFL-leading 17 rushing scores. The 224-pound Williams does most of his damage in the red zone -- which, by the way, is another ding on Kamara’s fantasy value long-term. In his second season with the Lions, Williams led the NFL in rushing attempts inside the 20-yard line, the 10 and the 5. A whopping 14 of his 17 touchdowns came from inside the 5. Williams is absolutely due for some regression to the mean. He had 13 rushing touchdowns over his first five seasons combined before his 2022 explosion. But the complementary talents in New Orleans’ backfield make Kamara and Williams the most intriguing RB handcuff option of the season, if you are willing to wait out Kamara’s likely suspension.
Jamaal Williams 2022 Outlook
Williams is a strong runner and the perfect thunder to D'Andre Swift's lightning. And, as Fansided.com's Brad Berreman suggested, in light of how the Lions have struggled to get consistent production from running backs over the last several years, Williams' first season with team looks pretty solid. Berreman went on to advise his readers that Williams' role in the Lions' backfield is not going away in 2022, but it's also dependent on the health of Swift. There's plenty of optimism, around Swift heading into his third season, and plenty of fantasy football buzz, but should said fantasy buzz extend to his backfield mate? Pro Football Focus contends Williams is a weekly candidate to rack up double-digit touches and could flirt with heightened scoring frequency should the Lions' offense take even a minor step forward. He's a prime late-late round pick for rosters lacking much of a floor at the position. In his 13 games last season, Williams had double-digit touches 11 times. He topped 50 total yards nine times. Spurred by at least 15 carries in each game he played in 2021 with Swift entirely or mostly out, Williams topped 75 total yards in all three and delivered no less than flex-worthy fantasy production. So, he's not just a handcuff. Williams can be a later-round play, an RB4 who's capable of much more on a week-to-week basis.
Jamaal Williams 2021 Outlook
The Lions have high expectations for running back D'Andre Swift heading into his second season in 2021. Still, incoming GM Brad Holmes and HC Dan Campbell understand that Swift can't do it alone. It's one of the big reasons the Lions opted to get Swift some help this offseason by signing Williams in free agency. Williams has rushed for at least 460 yards in each of his four seasons as the No. 2 back in Green Bay, averaging 4.0 yards per carry in the process. He's also caught at least 30 passes in each of the last two seasons. Swift, Williams and Kerryon Johnson are all good receivers out of the backfield for Detroit. But in Williams, the Lions have added an experienced, durable and versatile weapon to pair with Swift. Expect him to be the No. 2 in Detroit.
