James Conner 2023 Outlook
The Cardinals, a team that started the 2021 season 10-2, has come completely undone. Despite the star power of Kyler Murray on paper, there’s little help on either side of the ball and a new coaching regime asked to pick up the pieces. How does Conner fit into all this? For starters, this isn’t Kliff Kingsbury’s Air Raid anymore. New coach Jonathan Gannon hired a first-time offensive coordinator in Drew Petzing whose work history leaves little for fantasy owners to go on. He’s worked mainly with quarterbacks and receivers in Cleveland and Minnesota, but his former boss in each location, Kevin Stefanski, does like to run the ball. At least Conner is indisputably the No. 1 back in Arizona. While his touches dropped from 2021 to 2022, he won’t suddenly find himself in a timeshare with Keaontay Ingram. Without a timetable for Murray’s return from his ACL injury and with DeAndre Hopkins gone, someone on this team needs to score the touchdowns, so why not the guy with two seasons of double-digit TDs on his ledger?
James Conner 2022 Outlook
The Cardinals made Conner's return a priority and proved it the first day of free agency, when the veteran agreed to a new three-year contract. Conner's deal is worth $21 million and includes $16 million over the first two years. ... After struggling through injury near the end of his run in Pittsburgh, Conner proved to be a force as a runner and a difference-maker near the goal line in his first season with the Cardinals. In addition to running for 752 yards and 15 TDs on 202 carries, Conner improved as a pass-catcher hauling in 37 of 39 targets for 375 yards and three more TDs. The Cardinals were only able to keep half of their running back tandem, as Chase Edmonds signed with the Dolphins, leaving an opening for Eno Benjamin or incoming rookie Keaontay Ingram to step into a larger role with newly-signed former Chiefs Darrel Williams providing depth. Still, it's hard to imagine Conner not dominating the touches. Of course, the risk with any primary ball carrier is durability and that's no different with Conner. Add in his role as a receiver and the risk increases. But his body type gives Conner an advantage when it comes to taking hits and lasting an entire season as an integral piece of the Cardinals' offense. With a clear path to workload, a healthy Conner has top-10 potential at his position.
James Conner 2021 Outlook
According to ESPN.com, the "Cardinals added much-needed depth in the backfield" when Conner agreed to terms on a one-year contract in April. From a fantasy perspective, that's the key. Arizona was in need of another running back after letting Kenyan Drake go in free agency. That makes it all but certain Conner and productive holdover Chase Edmonds will share reps and responsibilities in coach Kliff Kingsbury's offense that asks running backs to be both rushers and receivers. Considering the narrow -- albeit relatively high-end -- band of production the team has gotten from Edmonds, a timeshare makes sense. ... Conner will reunite with Cardinals RBs coach James Saxon, who was his position coach in Pittsburgh in 2017 and 2018. Under Saxon’s tutelage Connor went to the Pro Bowl in 2018 after rushing for 973 yards and 12 touchdowns, tied for the third most in the NFL, and while catching 55 passes for 497 yards and a touchdown in 13 games. Conner had toe surgery this offseason but is expected to be fully recovered in time for training camp. Which is good news. Conner will be expected to contribute from the outset as Arizona appears to be all-in for 2021.
