Kareem Hunt 2022 Outlook
As SBNation.com pointed out, the NFL has evolved over the years to become a passing-dominant league and running backs have subsequently fallen out of favor across the land. Except, of course, in Cleveland where the Browns currently boast a running back room that is the envy of the other 31 teams. ... The unquestioned leader of the group is Nick Chubb, who established himself as one of the top three running backs in the league. His role on the team is fully set and unquestioned. But Hunt's value to the offense was on full display last season when he missed nine games with injuries. Hunt takes Cleveland's offense to a different level given what he adds in the passing game, and the Browns were clearly not the same when he was out of the lineup. Of course, as 247Sports.com notes, once a running back hits 26 the injury bug and reduction in production can start to occur. This is something a smart front office will be aware of (and which will likely shape his longer-term future with the club). But heading into 2022, fantasy managers might want to use last year's downtime -- and the resulting diminished totals -- to reap some value, especially in an offense that's likely to be at least somewhat pass heavier with the additions of Deshaun Watson and Amari Cooper.
Kareem Hunt 2021 Outlook
Last season, which was our first seeing a full year of Hunt with Cleveland, he made his presence felt, both on the ground and as a pass-catcher. As Fansided.com notes, in addition to posting 841 rushing yards (mostly spelling Nick Chubb), Hunt's ability to confound defenders was often on display, via both pure power and his make-you-miss prowess. He had six rushing touchdowns as well, further proving his impact on games when given the opportunity to shine on the ground. Additionally, Hunt is a highly capable pass-catching option for Baker Mayfield, which aids the Browns' efforts in moving the chains and in the red zone, as he demonstrated with five receiving touchdowns in 2020. Fansided believes we should see more of that sort of thing from Hunt this season via check-downs, option routes and screens. And, of course, we could see more in general. With the NFL moving to 17 games, the Browns (and the rest of the league) are going to need to rely on multiple backs more than ever going forward. That could lead to more consistent week-to-week production for Hunt even if he merely continues with his change-of-pace role.
Kareem Hunt 2020 Outlook
Hunt will be back in Cleveland this season after signing his restricted free-agent tender. After serving an eight-game suspension to start the 2019 season, Hunt ended up playing a big role in Cleveland's offense as a pass-catcher, blocker and runner. A 2017 third-round pick by the Chiefs, Hunt led the NFL with 1,327 rushing yards during his rookie season. He followed in 2018 with 1,202 yards of offense in 11 games before his abrupt release because of off-field incidents. His return in 2020 gives new HC Kevin Stefanski another dynamic backfield weapon alongside Nick Chubb. And Hunt proved to be more than capable of delivering fantasy production in that complementary role. In fact, he was a reliable No. 2/3 fantasy back in the eight games he was active, ranking RB11-RB20 in five games and scoring 11-plus points in all but two games. Most of his points came as a receiver, as Hunt scored 71.5 points catching passes and just 29.9 points as a runner. But that doesn't mean he can't run; per FantasyPros, Hunt broke a tackle every 2.38 touches, the best in the NFL among running backs with 20-plus touches. ... So in addition to simply handcuffing Chubb, Hunt is a standalone fantasy prospect working behind him.
