Marlon Mack 2020 Outlook
Asked the first week of June if Mack should retain the starting running back position (over incoming rookie Jonathan Taylor), HC Frank Reich replied: "There's definitely inherent respect for the starter returning. And that's the way I see this. ... I see it as a 1-1 (punch).” Taking over the featured role in 2019, Mack was good but not great, ranking in the top 10 among backs just once while finishing as the RB11-RB15 six different times. So now, as 107.5.com's Ken Bowen noted, the Colts have some decisions to make in splitting up the backfield reps. It makes sense to give Mack, who has yet to appear in all 16 of the Colts' regular-season games (topping out at 14 in 2017 and 2019), the early starting nod. And it's possible he retains that title all year long. But Reich wants a deep, versatile backfield and Taylor is going to be squarely in the mix to have a key role. As Bowen put it, "You do not draft a running back 41st overall, and one with the résumé that Taylor has, and have him relegated to a reserve role throughout his rookie season." And we know the staff really wants to use Nyheim Hines in the passing game, so it's going to be a nightmare for fantasy owners to figure out.
Marlon Mack 2019 Outlook
While many believed the Colts would run a full-blown running back committee under HC Frank Reich, once Mack returned in Week 6 from a hamstring injury, he took over the majority of the work in the backfield. From what they saw out of Mack in 2018, GM Chris Ballard expressed his confidence in the third-year rusher to be the workhorse. "He's a pretty good back. I mean 1,200 yards -- I think -- through the playoffs. ... And that is after missing four games," Ballard said at the NFL Combine. "We think a lot of Marlon. We think he can play on all three downs. We think he can carry the load." Behind a vastly improved offensive line, Mack finished the season carrying the ball 195 times for 904 rushing yards and nine rushing touchdowns. He averaged 4.7 yards per carry on the season and had four games with at least 118 rushing yards. Bottom line? The Colts' offense found a nice balance when Mack was leading the backfield. He helped move the chains while additionally taking pressure off Andrew Luck. As USA Today noted, Reich's offense will always be pass first (as it should be with an elite quarterback), but having a player of Mack's talent helps balance out the game plan, especially late in contests.
Marlon Mack 2018 Outlook
A fourth-round pick in 2017, Mack ran 93 times for 358 yards and three touchdowns as a rookie. According to the Indianapolis Star, Mack finished his rookie season second in the league in percentage of runs that went for no yards or less (32.2 percent). That's one out of every three rushes that ended at or behind the line of scrimmage. Those are the strikeouts. The homers? He was tops in the NFL in 20-yard runs (5.4 percent of his total carries). There's no doubt Mack added an explosive layer to a Colts unit that sorely needed it. With Frank Gore's departure, Mack should get more work this season despite the presence of steady veteran Robert Turbin and the additions of Nyheim Hines in Round 4 and Jordan Wilkins in Round 5 of April's draft. Mack underwent off-season shoulder surgery to repair a torn labrum but is expected to be fully-healthy by training camp. All that said, Mack has excellent upside if he can prove the ball security woes he's dealt with since his days in college are behind him and his time working behind Gore has helped him mature between the tackles.
