Marlon Mack 2022 Outlook
The Texans signed Mack to a contract in March. The veteran running back spent his first five seasons with the AFC South rival Indianapolis Colts. His best season came in 2019, when he ran for 1,091 yards and eight touchdowns on 247 carries. Mack joins running backs Rex Burkhead, Royce Freeman and Scottie Phillips on the Texans' roster. Houston kept five running backs on the 53-man roster to start the 2021 season, but the unit struggled in Tim Kelly's offense. The Texans finished the season last in the NFL in Football Outsiders' rushing DVOA. The hope is new coordinator Pep Hamilton can get some more out of the talent on hand, and the addition of Mack could work in his favor. The 2017 fourth-round pick tore an Achilles in the 2020 opener and missed the rest of the season. The Colts that year had drafted running back Jonathan Taylor, who replaced the injured Mack and finished third in the NFL in rushing yards behind Derrick Henry and Dalvin Cook. In his NFL career, Mack has run for 2,484 yards and 20 touchdowns on 567 attempts. He also has 57 catches for 448 yards and two touchdowns. Even with the Texans drafting promising Florida State running back Dameon Pierce in April, Mack has the opportunity to make the most of a second chance and could turn out to be a steal for the Texans and fantasy managers alike.
Marlon Mack 2021 Outlook
Marlon Mack (IND)
Mack's 2020 season ended in the team's first game, but that did not mark the end of his time with the Colts. Indy re-signed Mack to a one-year, $2 million deal. ... Mack tore his Achilles in Week 1, keeping him from building on his 442 carries for 1,999 yards and 17 touchdowns over the previous two seasons. As Profootballtalk.com notes, it wasn't long ago that Jim Irsay was touting Mack as a potential 1,500-yard back. The upside talent is still there even if the Achilles saps some of his explosiveness -- if he can get enough work. Jonathan Taylor took over as the lead back in the wake of Mack's injury and the 2020 second-rounder's success makes him a good bet to continue in that role. While it's fair to believe Frank Reich can find a way to get Mack touches by working him into the mix with Nyheim Hines behind Taylor, a front-line role isn't likely. Indeed, The Athletic's Stephen Holder thought Mack might want to leave Indy and have greater opportunity. But Holder conceded the money wasn't going to be much better elsewhere and all things being equal, why go run behind another offensive line when you can run behind Quenton Nelson? A fair point.
Marlon Mack 2020 Outlook
Asked the first week of June if Mack should retain the starting running back position (over incoming rookie Jonathan Taylor), HC Frank Reich replied: "There's definitely inherent respect for the starter returning. And that's the way I see this. ... I see it as a 1-1 (punch).” Taking over the featured role in 2019, Mack was good but not great, ranking in the top 10 among backs just once while finishing as the RB11-RB15 six different times. So now, as 107.5.com's Ken Bowen noted, the Colts have some decisions to make in splitting up the backfield reps. It makes sense to give Mack, who has yet to appear in all 16 of the Colts' regular-season games (topping out at 14 in 2017 and 2019), the early starting nod. And it's possible he retains that title all year long. But Reich wants a deep, versatile backfield and Taylor is going to be squarely in the mix to have a key role. As Bowen put it, "You do not draft a running back 41st overall, and one with the résumé that Taylor has, and have him relegated to a reserve role throughout his rookie season." And we know the staff really wants to use Nyheim Hines in the passing game, so it's going to be a nightmare for fantasy owners to figure out.
