Curtis Samuel 2022 Outlook
Samuel battled muscle injuries all season and only suited up for Washington in five games in 2021. Six catches for 27 yards and zero touchdowns would be his only contribution to the Commanders' struggling offense all year. Though his first season in D.C. was disappointing, Samuel is still only 25 and has time to blossom into one of Washington's biggest threats. As long as he's healthy. Early indications have been positive. "[He's looking] good. It's good to see him here," head coach Rivera said in April. "We haven't been able to go out on the field and watch these guys work yet, by rule, but just listening to what the strength and conditioning guys are telling us about him coming in and looking really good, moving around really well. We do get to watch the workout stuff that we do get to video, and when you do see him moving around, you feel pretty confident about it. ..." In four seasons in Carolina, Samuel had 257 touches for 2,565 yards and 19 touchdowns. The question for fantasy managers is whether they believe he might be capable of handling a role similar to that of Deebo Samuel in San Francisco and be a workhorse in both the pass and run game? We will find out come Week 1 of 2022. Those investing late-round picks will be able to quickly move on if that's not the case.
Curtis Samuel 2021 Outlook
Richard Sherman recently claimed that Terry McLaurin would be a special player with some additional talent at wideout. The Football Team made a move to help find out if that's the case. They signed Samuel to a three-year deal worth $34.5 million. Samuel posted career-bests in multiple categories for the Panthers last season. But as ESPN suggested, Samuel's most impressive stat this past season was his catch rate (79.4 percent) that led all NFL receivers and was well ahead of his 56.3 percent rate the previous three seasons. He also became one of the league leaders in converting third-down catches for first downs. Washington also wanted to add speed at receiver and accomplished that mission with Samuel, who ran the 40-yard dash in 4.31 seconds at the 2017 scouting Combine. (McLaurin ran a 4.35 two years later.) It won't be the first time that Samuel and McLaurin are part of the same receiving corps. They were both at Ohio State in 2015 and 2016. In addition, Washington has RBs Antonio Gibson and J.D. McKissic, both former wideouts capable of helping the pass game while split outside or in the slot. Samuel, a former college running back, will complement their skills by occasionally aligning in the backfield but focusing mostly as a receiver.
Curtis Samuel 2020 Outlook
The Panthers loaded up on receivers this offseason, adding Robby Anderson, Seth Roberts, Pharoh Cooper and Keith Kirkwood and re-signing DeAndrew White. That gives the Panthers 10 receivers and has raised a question about whether they might be looking to trade Samuel. Turns out that wasn't the case. According to The Athletic.com, the Panthers are trying to give new QB Teddy Bridgewater more weapons with which to succeed in OC Joe Brady's offense, not fewer. Samuel, a second-round choice in 2017, had his most productive season in 2019 but it wasn't a high bar. As Bleacher Report's Gary Davenport noted, Samuel's numbers haven't been especially impressive. But he has shown flashes (especially last year) of the elusiveness in the open field that led the Panthers to pick the running back in Round 2 in 2017 and convert him to wide receiver. Davenport went on to explain that what Samuel does well (turn short throws into long gains) appears to mesh well with both Carolina's new offense and Bridgewater. The question is, what kind of role can be carved out with Christian McCaffrey, D.J. Moore, Anderson and perhaps even TE Ian Thomas all ahead of him. As CBSSports.com summed up: "It's hard to see how he tops 100 targets without a significant injury.'
