Curtis Samuel 2023 Outlook
Could changing jersey numbers signify an uptick in output for Samuel? The veteran receiver and the Commanders sure hope so. While his first full season in Washington was a solid one on the heels of an injury-plagued 2021, Samuel still fell 13 receptions and nearly 200 yards shy of his previous career bests, set in 2020 with Carolina. With Commanders quarterback Taylor Heinicke departing in free agency, the No. 4 came open in the equipment room, and Samuel pounced. That’s the jersey number he wore for Ohio State, prompting a change from his usual No. 10. Samuel played in every game for Washington last season, but durability didn’t always equate with productivity. In four of the team’s final seven games, he was targeted four times or fewer. After striking for seven catches, 78 yards and a score in Week 2 at Detroit, Samuel never had more than 65 yards receiving in a game the rest of the season. Washington figures to open up its passing game with offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy coming to the Commanders from the Kansas City Chiefs, although developing Sam Howell at quarterback in the scheme understandably will take time.
Curtis Samuel 2022 Outlook
Samuel battled muscle injuries all season and only suited up for Washington in five games in 2021. Six catches for 27 yards and zero touchdowns would be his only contribution to the Commanders' struggling offense all year. Though his first season in D.C. was disappointing, Samuel is still only 25 and has time to blossom into one of Washington's biggest threats. As long as he's healthy. Early indications have been positive. "[He's looking] good. It's good to see him here," head coach Rivera said in April. "We haven't been able to go out on the field and watch these guys work yet, by rule, but just listening to what the strength and conditioning guys are telling us about him coming in and looking really good, moving around really well. We do get to watch the workout stuff that we do get to video, and when you do see him moving around, you feel pretty confident about it. ..." In four seasons in Carolina, Samuel had 257 touches for 2,565 yards and 19 touchdowns. The question for fantasy managers is whether they believe he might be capable of handling a role similar to that of Deebo Samuel in San Francisco and be a workhorse in both the pass and run game? We will find out come Week 1 of 2022. Those investing late-round picks will be able to quickly move on if that's not the case.
Curtis Samuel 2021 Outlook
Richard Sherman recently claimed that Terry McLaurin would be a special player with some additional talent at wideout. The Football Team made a move to help find out if that's the case. They signed Samuel to a three-year deal worth $34.5 million. Samuel posted career-bests in multiple categories for the Panthers last season. But as ESPN suggested, Samuel's most impressive stat this past season was his catch rate (79.4 percent) that led all NFL receivers and was well ahead of his 56.3 percent rate the previous three seasons. He also became one of the league leaders in converting third-down catches for first downs. Washington also wanted to add speed at receiver and accomplished that mission with Samuel, who ran the 40-yard dash in 4.31 seconds at the 2017 scouting Combine. (McLaurin ran a 4.35 two years later.) It won't be the first time that Samuel and McLaurin are part of the same receiving corps. They were both at Ohio State in 2015 and 2016. In addition, Washington has RBs Antonio Gibson and J.D. McKissic, both former wideouts capable of helping the pass game while split outside or in the slot. Samuel, a former college running back, will complement their skills by occasionally aligning in the backfield but focusing mostly as a receiver.
