Christian McCaffrey 2022 Outlook
McCaffrey has missed 23 games the past two seasons because of ankle, hamstring and shoulder injuries. Still, asked in January if there would be any benefit to him playing more in the slot to cut down on injuries, he deadpanned, "No." That said, the question seemed more pertinent after former Titan D'Onta Foreman signed with the Panthers in March. Foreman is more of a power back and McAdoo wants a more physical running game. Rhule finally answered the question in March. "We can always move him around and utilize him, but at the end of the day, he's a back," Rhule said. That doesn't mean McCaffrey's role won't change some under new offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo, who wants to develop a scheme to take the pressure off the quarterback having to be a star. That said, with Foreman and Chuba Hubbard on hand, we could see more two-back sets in which McCaffrey or one of the other backs shifts to another position. You also could see an attempt to lighten McCaffrey's load so the former Stanford star doesn't have the 403 touches and 429 snaps he did in 2019 when he became the third player in NFL history to have 1,000 yards rushing and receiving in the same season. Still, expecting McCaffrey to continue serving as the primary offensive weapon here seems reasonable. And if that's the case, and he's on the field, his past production shouldn't be ignored.
Christian McCaffrey 2021 Outlook
McCaffrey suffered a high-ankle sprain in Week 2, missed the next six games, and then separated his shoulder upon returning to the lineup in Week 9. He would not return to action before the regular season came to an end, and could have simply accepted the season as a lost year. Instead, heading into 2021, McCaffrey hopes that there was a silver lining around the black cloud that lingered over his head in 2020. The star running back told Profootballtalk.com in February he had to "quickly learn to be patient" due to the injuries and that he learned a lot about "the flow of the game in general" by watching games instead of playing in them. Meanwhile, fantasy managers need to realize that McCaffrey was still really good in the few games he played last year. According to FantasyPros.com, the 30.1 PPR points per game that McCaffrey scored in his three 2020 appearances were the third-most of all-time for RBs with at least 75 touches in a season. As SI.com notes, in his last 19 games dating back to 2019, McCaffrey has scored 20-plus points 17 times, including eight games with more than 30 points. Viewing him as anything but the top pick overall seems unwise.
Christian McCaffrey 2020 Outlook
Last year McCaffrey joined Marshall Faulk and Roger Craig as the only players to total 1,000 rushing yards and 1,000 receiving yards in a season and is coming off back-to-back 100-plus catch campaigns. He's accumulated a whopping 303 receptions in three seasons and fantasy owners have been prime beneficiaries. Not only did he rank in the top 20 an amazing 15 weeks in 2019, but McCaffrey also scored 20-plus fantasy points 14 times. According to NFL.com, no other back accomplished that mark more than seven times. McCaffrey also led the position in games with 25-plus fantasy point performances with 11. Heading into 2020, McCaffrey is suddenly the face of the Panthers' franchise and a worthy one at that. Even with the changes in Carolina under new HC Matt Rhule, McCaffrey should remain the focal point. While McCaffrey's workload -- he led all players with 403 touches last year, and only Ezekiel Elliott (736) has more over the last two seasons than McCaffrey (729) -- is a concern, McCaffrey hasn't missed a game yet in his career. An unguardable talent, McCaffrey tilts the field in his favor whenever he touches the ball and can't be blanketed in space. Surpassing the 1,000/1,000 barrier another time, especially if he has to carry Carolina's offense once again, would not be a reach. Draft accordingly.
