Joe Mixon 2023 Outlook
Mixon’s production certainly took a step down from the Pro Bowl level he was at in 2021. His average rushing yards per attempt (3.9) and yards per game (58.1) dipped to their lowest levels in a few seasons. The Bengals may have signed Orlando Brown Jr. to protect Joe Burrow’s blind side, but the state of the interior offensive line is another matter. Mixon seemed to be given less running room at times last year. Finally, there’s the issue of rushing opportunities: The Bengals ran the fourth-fewest times in the league while passing the seventh-most in 2022. But that also points to what intrigues us most about Mixon at the ADP he’s going at: his usage in the passing game. He set career highs in targets (75), catches (60) and receiving yards (441) in 2022, hitting totals that he previously came nowhere close to -- despite playing in just 14 games. We know Burrow has plenty of weapons downfield, but he’s a smart quarterback who will check down when necessary. This brings Mixon a slight boost in PPR leagues.
Joe Mixon 2022 Outlook
As NFL.com noted, Mixon authored his first Pro Bowl season while carrying the load, netting 1,205 yards and 13 TDs on 292 carries. As defenses fretted over the Bengals' receiver weapons, Mixon feasted on light boxes, generating 424 yards after contact in such situations, third-most in the NFL, per Next Gen Stats. But as Pro Football Network's Jason Katz suggests, the concern for Mixon remains the receiving work. While his increase in routes run resulted in a career-best 314 receiving yards, he still came off the field on way too many third downs in favor of Samaje Perine. We now have five years of evidence suggesting the Bengals are not going to use Mixon in a three-down role. Katz further noted the Bengals being a good team will help offset Mixon not being the running back in clear passing situations as they'll be in neutral to positive game script more, keeping Mixon on the field. At the same time, we'd like Mixon to see those third-down snaps. As a result, Mixon's 2021 likely represents his ceiling. Can he do it again? Absolutely -- especially with the Bengals fielding an upgraded offensive line. But Katz believes the more likely scenario is we get 85-95 percent of Mixon's 2021 season as opposed to a further ascension into the ranks of the super-elite.
Joe Mixon 2021 Outlook
Coming off back-to-back 1,000-yard rushing seasons, Mixon was supposed to be the workhorse back to take pressure off quarterback Joe Burrow last year. Injuries wrecked those plans. Mixon played in just six games due to a foot injury that wiped out the final 10 games of his 2020 season. The good news? Coach Zach Taylor said Mixon is healthy and ready to go for 2021. "Joe's good. He's working out," Taylor said in March. "I know he feels really good right now. ..." Keeping Mixon healthy will go a long way in helping Burrow bounce back from his ACL tear. Not only has Mixon proven he can be productive behind a faulty offensive line, he's becoming a pass-catching option for the young QB as well. Mixon was on pace for 69 targets last season before the foot injury, which would have been a career-high. Adding to that, the release of Giovani Bernard frees up more passing-down snaps and targets for Mixon. Given all this, Mixon will handle "the largest workload" of his career in 2021, Paul Dehner of The Athletic predicted in late June. Of course, all of this is predicated on Mixon staying healthy for the entire 2021 season, but fantasy managers could benefit from all the pieces lining up here.
