Mitchell Trubisky 2023 Outlook
The Steelers are going with continuity in their quarterback room behind 2022 first-round pick Kenny Pickett. After agreeing to re-sign Mason Rudolph, GM Omar Khan announced Trubisky would return as well. "We're finishing up an extension with Mitch Trubisky," Khan said. "We feel good about our quarterback room, so that was an important piece." NFL reported it's a two-year extension that also lowers the QB's cap number for the 2023 season (previously $10 million). Trubisky appeared in seven games with five starts for Pittsburgh last year. He completed 65 percent of his passes for 1,252 yards with four touchdowns and five interceptions. The No. 2 overall pick of the 2017 draft, Trubisky has appeared in 64 games with 55 starts for the Bears, Bills, and Steelers. He's compiled a 31-24 record as a starter. From a fantasy perspective, expecting high-end production from Trubisky, should he be forced into the fray, is a reach. That said, expecting him to play well enough for the pieces around him to retain a portion of their value is reasonable enough.
Mitchell Trubisky 2022 Outlook
The Steelers made a significant addition in the wake of Ben Roethlisberger's retirement by agreeing to a two-year deal with Trubisky. According to multiple observers, the former No. 2 overall pick is expected to be the starter, although the selection of Kenny Pickett with the 20th pick overall opens the door to legitimate competition. ... Trubisky spent his first four seasons in Chicago, making a Pro Bowl in his second season, but struggled down the stretch and fell out of favor with Bears fans. He spent 2021 in Buffalo rehabbing his image but hardly saw the field as Josh Allen's backup (eight pass attempts). While his mobility is a positive, outside of two-quarterback formats, he's not going to be high on your draft-day radar. The issue here is how the situation under center impacts more fantasy-relevant players like Najee Harris, Diontae Johnson, Chase Claypool and Pat Freiermuth. During his run as a starter in Chicago, Trubisky was at his best on shorter, safer throws, which could fit well in Steeler coordinator Matt Canada's scheme. But none of that seems to dovetail ideally with what Johnson and Claypool do best. That said, Harris and Freiermuth could benefit and a downgrade at QB already seems to be baked into the cake for Johnson and Claypool, who could be had at better-than-expected prices.
Mitchell Trubisky 2021 Outlook
Trubisky spent his first four years in Chicago, after the Bears made the disastrous decision to trade up to No. 2 overall to select him ahead of Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson. Moving on from Chicago, other destinations might have offered Trubisky a chance to compete for a starting spot, but joining the Bills made sense, giving him the chance to revamp his career out of the limelight. Josh Allen is the clear-cut starter and in line for a massive contract extension. There is no question who the alpha in Buffalo is. However, given Allen's playing style, injury is also a possibility. Upgrading the backup spot from Matt Barkley to Trubisky is a solid move for Bills GM Brandon Beane. If Buffalo needs a sub due to injury, the former first-round pick can be a placeholder for a game or two without changing Buffalo's offense. "Athletically, (Trubisky) can do a lot of things that Josh can do," Beane said. In the meantime, Trubisky can work on improving his mechanics and learning from the sideline with no added pressure. Bills coordinator Brian Daboll has helped Allen improve by leaps and bounds in three seasons; tutoring Trubisky could be similarly beneficial as he attempts to refurbish his career.
