Mitchell Trubisky 2020 Outlook
The Bears are pleased with the way Trubisky is dealing with their decision to decline his fifth-year option and that he's embracing the competition with newcomer Nick Foles. "We had the discussion with Mitchell, explained it to him," HC Matt Nagy said. "He handled it really well. ... We move on." As the Chicago Sun-Times noted, the way Trubisky's career has transpired, it was simply a business decision, not an insult. The Bears' confidence in Trubisky -- or lack thereof -- was defined when they traded for Foles and assumed the $21 million in guaranteed money on Foles' contract. So, given his 85.8 career passer rating in three seasons and 41 starts, Trubisky knew where he stood. Though Foles is the heavy Vegas favorite to beat out Trubisky for the starting job, it's still Trubisky's job to lose. That he no longer has a contract for 2021 doesn't change that. But he has to answer some questions. After two years of being handed the starting job, how will he respond to a challenge? Will that heighten his focus? Does he have it in him to win a competition? That will play out over the coming weeks. And the uncertainty is certainly enough to preclude him from being a viable fantasy prospect.
Mitchell Trubisky 2019 Outlook
As Yahoo's Frank Schwab framed it, "Some quarterbacks seem to master the NFL right away. Guys like Deshaun Watson and Baker Mayfield come to mind. It’s OK if we give other NFL quarterbacks more than a minute or two to find their way. Especially those who might have been stuck as a rookie with a horrible team and worse coaching staff, then had to learn a very complex offense in Year 2. In other words, it’s too soon to know what the Bears have in Trubisky. ..." It's a fair point. Fantasy owners are clearly interested -- and optimistic -- given the offense Trubisky plays in, his supporting cast and his superior mobility. But we need to remember that he had only 13 college starts at North Carolina before the Bears made him the No. 2 overall pick. He was playing with no-name receivers under HC John Fox as a rookie. Enter Matt Nagy with as expansive of a playbook as the NFL has and Trubisky was challenged -- and he remains a work in progress. Consistency will have to come sooner than later -- there is the whole matter of that five-year rookie contract, and the question of whether Trubisky will be worth a massive extension -- but the Bears are feeling good with his development thus far.
Mitchell Trubisky 2018 Outlook
New HC Matt Nagy knows that deploying Trubisky as a runner -- or, at the very least, the threat of being a runner -- will open things up for the rest of the offense. "In Kansas City, that was one of Alex Smith's strengths: being able to use his legs," Nagy said. "(Trubisky) has that. Mitch has the ability to make guys miss." Nagy's offense requires athletic offensive linemen because everything revolves around the all-important quarterback behind them. Asked what stood out about Trubisky's rookie season, Nagy almost immediately began discussing the use of run-pass options. He then mentioned the improvements Trubisky made with his decision making and accuracy. Even though Trubisky's mobility was obvious since last year's OTAs, the previous offense barely scraped the surface in this regard. Trubisky was at his best in games when he mixed in play-action with some read-option, quarterback draws and rollout passes against a spread-out defense. Without speed receivers, the Bears were unable to test Trubisky’s vertical passing abilities. These will certainly be on display in the future if the team’s receiver talent continues to improve. Worth noting: Per NFL.com, no quarterback has an easier schedule during the fantasy playoffs (based on 2017 FPA home/road results) than Trubisky.
