Raheem Mostert 2022 Outlook
Mostert joins Chase Edmonds and Sony Michel as new additions to the backfield in Miami. He comes to the team after playing for new Dolphins' head coach Mike McDaniel with the 49ers the last five seasons. Mostert, who entered the 2021 season as the 49ers' top running back, again couldn't stay on the field, suffering a season-ending knee injury after just two rushing attempts in Week 1. That came on the heels of him being limited in 2020 to just 521 rushing yards over eight games because of knee and ankle issues. All told, Mostert played 46 games in six seasons with the 49ers. Considered one of the fastest players in the league, he averaged 5.7 yards per carry in San Francisco but was unable to stay on the field consistently enough to fill the role of primary back as the team hoped he would. Mostert burst on the scene during San Francisco's run to Super Bowl LIV after the 2019 season, highlighted by his 220-yard, four-touchdown performance against the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Championship Game. Mostert, said to be nearly fully recovered from the aforementioned knee injury, has rushed for 1,610 yards and has 14 total touchdowns since entering the league in 2015. Expecting him to have a role -- albeit not the lead role -- seems reasonable.
Raheem Mostert 2021 Outlook
Mostert remains motivated to prove himself. He tweeted a post in April, on his 29th birthday, highlighting his place atop the NFL's career rushing yards per attempt list with a simple message about how his doubters will "wake up eventually." Mostert was one of the many 49ers limited by injuries in 2020, as he played in just eight games. The tailback showed off some impressive quickness when he did play, registering the two fastest speeds in the NFL according to the league's Next Gen Stats. After a strong 2019 season and even better postseason, Mostert clearly is pumped up to get into training camp with his 49ers teammates for the 2021 NFL season. While Tevin Coleman and Jerick McKinnon are no longer in the mix in San Francisco, the 49ers traded up to land Ohio State running back Trey Sermon, adding him to the mix with free-agent addition Wayne Gallman, another rookie in Elijah Mitchell and holdovers Jeff Wilson Jr. and JaMycal Hasty. Mostert will have a lot to play for entering a contract year, meaning he'll be under pressure to both stay healthy and remain productive to keep the primary role, setting the stage for a big payday in 2022.
Raheem Mostert 2020 Outlook
Mostert has spent time with seven teams over his five NFL seasons, but he has only 178 regular-season carries to show for it. This year he expects something different. After an excellent postseason where he compiled 53 rushes for 336 yards and five touchdowns, Mostert has earned the right to be the 49ers' primary ball carrier in 2020. And he was bulking up this offseason in an effort to be ready for the heavier workload. "I'm actually gaining some more muscle," Mostert said. "So I'm able to take those hits and be one of those guys that are getting 200 carries. I've got to get prepared for that." Mostert never was a workhorse back in college, either. As Profootballtalk.com noted, in his most productive season at Purdue, he only had 93 carries for 529 yards. Now, assuming he can fend off challenges from Tevin Coleman and (a possibly-healthy) Jerick McKinnon (Matt Breida was traded to Miami), it appears this will be the year when Mostert can prove his worth as an every-down back. If that's the case, his production last season -- Mostert tied for ninth among RBs in games with 20-plus fantasy points (no other 49ers back had more than one) -- suggests he'll be a great value.
