Robby Anderson 2020 Outlook
Anderson signed a two-year, $20 million deal with the Panthers this offseason. He played at Temple when new Panthers coach Matt Rhule was the head coach there. Anderson spent four seasons with the Jets, grabbing 207 catches for 3,059 yards and 20 touchdowns. In 16 games last season, Anderson made 52 receptions for 779 yards and five touchdowns. As USA Today's Doug Farrar noted, Anderson was one of the more prolific deep threats in the NFL last season, catching nine passes of 20 or more air yards on 28 targets for 329 yards and three touchdowns. Per Pro Football Focus, only Julio Jones (126), Mike Evans (121) and Antonio Brown (113) have more deep targets than Anderson since 2016, which is when Anderson came into the NFL as an undrafted free agent. Now he's going to get solid money for that deep speed, as well as his consistency and reliability -- he's played in 62 of a possible 64 games in his NFL career. And he's going to do it for a coach that is fully aware of what he's capable of doing. With the Panthers, Anderson will be paired with 2018 first-round pick D.J Moore. The combo, along with RB Christian McCaffrey, will give new OC Joe Brady and incoming QB Teddy Bridgewater the potential for a potent offense -- assuming Bridgewater can maximize that deep speed.
Robby Anderson 2019 Outlook
Upon his arrival in New York, incoming HC Adam Gase spent two months evaluating last season's tape, figuring out which players fit his scheme. Anderson caught his attention. "You don't see a whole bunch of guys who have what he has and the way he tracks the ball down the field," Gase said. "I don't think I've ever been around a player that does it as smooth." And Gase has been around some pretty good receivers -- Demaryius Thomas (Broncos), Alshon Jeffery (Bears) and Jarvis Landry (Dolphins) -- so that's quite a compliment. Gase also said he would like to create some variety in Anderson's routes, allowing him to be more than a one-trick pony. Anderson believes he should be a 1,000-yard receiver this season, and there's reason to think that's not just hyperbole. According to ESPN's Mike Clay, during Weeks 1-9, Anderson handled a 16 percent target share (5.25 per game) and was 59th at wide receiver in fantasy points. Darnold then missed four games but after his return in Weeks 14 through 17, Anderson posted his four highest target shares of the season as one-third ( 10 per game) of Darnold's targets went his way. That increase helped Anderson score the seventh-most fantasy points during the span. If Darnold and Anderson pick up where they left off, 1,000 yards and a top-20 WR finish might just be reachable.
Robby Anderson 2018 Outlook
Anderson has two pending legal issues, and the smart money has the wideout missing some time in 2018 due to a suspension. This according to New York Daily News staffer Manish Mehta, who went on to write, "This might be hard for some people to accept, but Anderson isn't a bad guy. Does he need to steer clear of some questionable influences back home in Florida? I would say yes. But know this: The Jets aren't ready to give up on him. ..." Mehta's opinion is that the team does not plan to cut Anderson (barring another transgression obviously). Anderson is young (24), talented (a team-high 941 yards and seven TDs in 2017), cheap ($630,000 base salary in 2018) and could be under team control through 2019. In suggesting Anderson needs a mentor, Mehta added the young wideout must learn to handle everything that comes with being a professional athlete. All that said, when he's on the field there's no questioning Anderson's playmaking ability. As Bleacher Report noted, "Anderson is a lanky, fast, twitchy receiver who's turning into a complete player. His routes are crisp and decisive. ... After the catch, despite his slight frame, he has the burst and toughness to gain yardage consistently." Don't be afraid to jump in if his price drops due to all of the off-field issues.
