Robbie Anderson 2022 Outlook
Last August, the Panthers and Anderson agreed to a two-year, $29.5 million extension. Now, less than a year later, it's fair to wonder if the Panthers would like a do over. Anderson is coming off the worst campaign of his professional career. 2021 saw the talented pass catcher post lows in receiving yards, yards per reception (9.8) and catch rate (48.2 percent). In fact, ESPN's Mike Clay points out Anderson had arguably the most inefficient season by any wide receiver in the league in 2021. Anderson ranked sixth in both snaps and routes, but was 28th in targets, 44th in receptions and 64th in yards. That catch rate, his 4.7 yards per target and 0.9 yards per route run were all 87th or worse among 91 qualified wide receivers. Beyond that, Anderson wasn't nearly as explosive last season, thanks partly to the lack of a vertical attack and partly due to heavy usage in the slot (according to Rotoballer, almost 75 percent of Anderson's total PPR points last year came on snaps in which he ran his route out of the slot). Clay added a top-20 fantasy showing in Matt Rhule's offense in 2020 adds some hope, but he's too risky to consider before the later rounds. Worth noting: There was talk Carolina could attempt to trade him, but as of now, there have been no takers.
Robbie Anderson 2021 Outlook
Reunited and it feels so good ... The Sam Darnold trade from New York to Carolina brings the quarterback and deep threat Anderson back together after the duo spent two seasons with the Jets. Anderson said he was "surprised" by the Panthers trading for Darnold, and he looks forward to rebuilding that rapport. "I think me and Sam had very good chemistry," Anderson said. "I think that really stems from communication and just trust." In two seasons with Darnold, Anderson totaled 102 catches for 1,531 yards and 11 TDs in 30 games played. The wideout did enjoy better seasons before and after playing with Darnold (63/941/7 in 2017 with Josh McCown; 95/1,096/3 last year in Carolina). Yet, it was clear heading toward the end of the 2019 season that the combo was building chemistry. "I think if you look at the growth between me and Sam, you notice toward the back end of me being with the Jets," Anderson explained, "him throwing the ball up in double coverage and just throwing the ball up. That came with time and just trust in me making those plays and coming through for him in the clutch. ..." Expecting positive touchdown regression here, regardless of his QB, seems very reasonable.
Robbie Anderson 2020 Outlook
Anderson signed a two-year, $20 million deal with the Panthers this offseason. He played at Temple when new Panthers coach Matt Rhule was the head coach there. Anderson spent four seasons with the Jets, grabbing 207 catches for 3,059 yards and 20 touchdowns. In 16 games last season, Anderson made 52 receptions for 779 yards and five touchdowns. As USA Today's Doug Farrar noted, Anderson was one of the more prolific deep threats in the NFL last season, catching nine passes of 20 or more air yards on 28 targets for 329 yards and three touchdowns. Per Pro Football Focus, only Julio Jones (126), Mike Evans (121) and Antonio Brown (113) have more deep targets than Anderson since 2016, which is when Anderson came into the NFL as an undrafted free agent. Now he's going to get solid money for that deep speed, as well as his consistency and reliability -- he's played in 62 of a possible 64 games in his NFL career. And he's going to do it for a coach that is fully aware of what he's capable of doing. With the Panthers, Anderson will be paired with 2018 first-round pick D.J Moore. The combo, along with RB Christian McCaffrey, will give new OC Joe Brady and incoming QB Teddy Bridgewater the potential for a potent offense -- assuming Bridgewater can maximize that deep speed.
