J.D. McKissic 2022 Outlook
One of the implications of the negotiating window that precedes the official opening of free agency is that deals agreed to in that period can't become official until the new league year is underway and that leaves an opening for players or teams to change their minds about their agreements. That's what happened with McKissic this year. He agreed to a two-year deal with the Bills during the negotiating window, but wound up backing out and re-signing with the Commanders instead. ... McKissic appeared in 16 regular season games in his first season in Washington in 2020, playing with four different quarterbacks, and he had more receiving yards (589) than he'd accumulated in his first four seasons in the NFL combined. In addition, his rushing total (365 yards) was just 37 fewer yards than he'd gotten from 2016 to 2019 combined. In short, McKissic had a career year, and it came out of nowhere. McKissic picked up 57 first-downs for the league's 31st ranked offense in 2020. He was explosive with the ball in his hands; he could pass block, and he was not just a pass-receiving third down back. Last year, McKissic's season was cut short by a Week 12 concussion that he didn't come back from. But in just 11 games, he was on track to pretty much match his 2020 yards from scrimmage. Expecting a similar role and workload -- even with the addition of rookie Brian Robinson Jr. -- seems reasonable this season.
J.D. McKissic 2021 Outlook
As FantasyPros.com put it, McKissic had "a sneaky good season" as a passing-down specialist. McKissic led all running backs with 110 targets last season and his 80 receptions were second to only Alvin Kamara. According to SI.com, since 2000, just six backs have had more targets in a single season: Christian McCaffrey (2017-2019), Darren Sproles (2011), Matt Forte (2014), David Johnson (2016), Saquon Barkley (2018) and James White (2018). To put all this in perspective, McKissic's previous career high in receptions was 34. NBCSSports.com went on to contend that while McKissic only found the end zone three times in 2020, he was arguably Washington's next-biggest receiving threat behind Terry McLaurin. Washington has upgraded at wideout with the addition of Curtis Samuel this offseason, but McKissic's role as a pass-catching running back shouldn't diminish, either. Remember, McKissic proved he can run the ball between the tackles when needed as well. He'll still be a change of pace to Antonio Gibson, but his receiving role will keep him viable in deeper PPR leagues.
J.D. McKissic 2020 Outlook
The Redskins' running back group is intriguing -- a mix of talent and question marks. Derrius Guice's talent isn't a question, and he's certainly not under the radar. But after three knee injuries in his first two seasons, his durability is a concern. Washington drafted Bryce Love in the fourth round in 2019 hoping his college knee injury would be healed for 2020 but there's still no guarantee that will be the case. They also have veterans Adrian Peterson and Peyton Barber for first- and second-down work. McKissic, a free-agent signing, will likely be a third-down back, but his background as a receiver gives him an edge running routes when aligned outside. On paper, it also provides versatility. If the Redskins can get McKissic and rookie running back Antonio Gibson (a receiver in college), on the field at the same time, it would present QB Dwayne Haskins with more options. Not to mention more players not named Terry McLaurin who can threaten the opposing defense. McKissic caught 34 passes for the Detroit Lions last season; the Redskins' hope is that, now in his fifth year playing running back, he can do much more.
