J.D. McKissic 2023 Outlook
McKissic spent the past three years with the Washington Commanders, but they didn’t need to bring him back to a crowded stable of running backs that will feature Brian Robinson Jr., Antonio Gibson and rookie Chris Rodriguez Jr. in 2023.If McKissic had a team as of now, his fantasy value would be higher here mainly due to what he brings in the passing game. McKissic is a pass-catching specialist who was targeted 203 times in 35 games for Washington, or 5.8 times per game. So PPR owners loved him, especially in 2020, when he put up career-high numbers of 80 receptions (on 110 targets!), 589 receiving yards and 365 rushing yards. With McKissic now pushing 30 years old, we can’t project whether an NFL team will snap him up before September. Maybe a team experiences one or more injuries at the position during preseason, a la the 2021 Baltimore Ravens, and McKissic starts getting calls for workouts. But as of this writing, Leonard Fournette, Ezekiel Elliott and Kareem Hunt were all also available as free agents.
J.D. McKissic 2022 Outlook
One of the implications of the negotiating window that precedes the official opening of free agency is that deals agreed to in that period can't become official until the new league year is underway and that leaves an opening for players or teams to change their minds about their agreements. That's what happened with McKissic this year. He agreed to a two-year deal with the Bills during the negotiating window, but wound up backing out and re-signing with the Commanders instead. ... McKissic appeared in 16 regular season games in his first season in Washington in 2020, playing with four different quarterbacks, and he had more receiving yards (589) than he'd accumulated in his first four seasons in the NFL combined. In addition, his rushing total (365 yards) was just 37 fewer yards than he'd gotten from 2016 to 2019 combined. In short, McKissic had a career year, and it came out of nowhere. McKissic picked up 57 first-downs for the league's 31st ranked offense in 2020. He was explosive with the ball in his hands; he could pass block, and he was not just a pass-receiving third down back. Last year, McKissic's season was cut short by a Week 12 concussion that he didn't come back from. But in just 11 games, he was on track to pretty much match his 2020 yards from scrimmage. Expecting a similar role and workload -- even with the addition of rookie Brian Robinson Jr. -- seems reasonable this season.
J.D. McKissic 2021 Outlook
As FantasyPros.com put it, McKissic had "a sneaky good season" as a passing-down specialist. McKissic led all running backs with 110 targets last season and his 80 receptions were second to only Alvin Kamara. According to SI.com, since 2000, just six backs have had more targets in a single season: Christian McCaffrey (2017-2019), Darren Sproles (2011), Matt Forte (2014), David Johnson (2016), Saquon Barkley (2018) and James White (2018). To put all this in perspective, McKissic's previous career high in receptions was 34. NBCSSports.com went on to contend that while McKissic only found the end zone three times in 2020, he was arguably Washington's next-biggest receiving threat behind Terry McLaurin. Washington has upgraded at wideout with the addition of Curtis Samuel this offseason, but McKissic's role as a pass-catching running back shouldn't diminish, either. Remember, McKissic proved he can run the ball between the tackles when needed as well. He'll still be a change of pace to Antonio Gibson, but his receiving role will keep him viable in deeper PPR leagues.
