Sterling Shepard 2022 Outlook
Shepard is sticking around to try to help the Giants turn things around. This after the receiver and New York agreed to a restructured contract in March. The agreement means the Giants' longest-tenured player will remain with the team for a seventh season. As NFL.com notes, Shepard has never been a game-breaking receiver in New York, but he's certainly been a consistent one. The wideout has caught at least 57 passes in all but one season -- his most recent -- racking up 3,518 yards, 20 touchdowns and an average of 11.2 yards per reception from 2016-2020. The 2021 season was a frustrating one for all, including Shepard, who was able to appear in just seven games, catching 36 passes for 366 yards and one touchdown as part of the league's second-worst passing offense. A second-round pick out of Oklahoma in 2016, Shepard has met expectations with the Giants, even as the team has faltered elsewhere. With Daniel Jones returning for a fourth season with the team in 2022, he'll have a familiar target in Shepard although both will be playing in a new offense being installed by former Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll, who was hired as New York's new head coach this offseason.
Sterling Shepard 2021 Outlook
The Giants are hoping to take a significant step forward on offense during the 2021 season. They've added new talent to the unit, including Kenny Golladay and Kadarius Toney, two elite playmakers who can change the course of a game in the blink of an eye. Shepard might just be hoping to turn back the clock and replicate his 2018 season, where he posted 872 yards and four touchdowns. That season Shepard played in all 16 games; otherwise his career has been littered with injuries that have derailed him and hurt his progression. He wants to remain completely healthy for the 2021 season and show his team that he can be a viable option week in and week out. Aside from his injury issues, Empire Sports Media noted Shepard has also dealt with a new quarterback who had yet to learn the NFL and its system. If Shepard can remain healthy the entire year, he can help this offense, even with its additional weapons and the return of Saquon Barkley. The question is whether he can also help your fantasy team. That seems dicey.
