Hunter Henry 2022 Outlook
Last offseason, the Patriots signed a pair of tight ends to give them more versatility over the middle of the field. Henry signed a three-year, $37.5 million contract the day after Smith got a four-year, $50 million deal. One of them, Henry, turned out to be plenty useful. Smith? Not so much. ... First of all, Henry played an entire season for the first time in his career. He also continued to prove to be a dangerous red-zone threat. The former Charger scored seven touchdowns over his first 10 games with 31 catches for 353 yards. Over his final seven starts, Henry's roll slowed a bit. Still, he continued to demonstrate his nose for the end zone with nine total touchdowns on just 75 targets. As SI.com's Shawn Childs pointed out, over his last 43 games, Henry caught 165 passes for 1,868 yards and 18 touchdowns on 244 targets. The Patriots won't give him enough chances to push much higher in the tight end rankings, with Smith, who was a fantasy non-factor with just 28 catches (on 45 targets), 294 yards and one touchdown, still expected to be active in the passing game. That said, expecting Hunter to retain his role as the team's primary pass catching tight end in 2022 -- and to continue being a major factor in the red zone is plenty reasonable.
Hunter Henry 2021 Outlook
As NFL.com's Kevin Patra put it, "Once again, 12 personnel will be in vogue in Foxboro. ..." This after the Patriots followed up the signing of Jonnu Smith by adding Henry. The Pats nabbing the top two tight ends in free agency is a bold move by Bill Belichick that immediately boosts New England's weaponry heading into 2021. When healthy, Henry is a difference-making pass catcher who can outrun linebackers and post up defensive backs. In 2020, he generated 613 yards on 60 receptions with four TDs in 14 games. The two young TEs are perfect complements: Henry is a classic in-line seam-stretching tight end, while Smith is an ideal move-TE for today's NFL offense. Neither is an award-winning blocker, but they are not inept, either. Belichick’s signing of Henry and Smith is sure to conjure memories of the Pats’ dynamic pairing of Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez. The new duo isn't as talented as the throwback combo, but the idea of combining an in-line option with a move-type player remains the same. Adding two top-shelf tight ends allows the Patriots scheme flexibility while providing Cam Newton, or whoever opens the season under center, big-bodied targets who can win one-on-one matchups and shine in the red zone.
