Jacoby Brissett 2023 Outlook
The Commanders kicked the tires on Tennessee QB Hendon Hooker before the draft but ultimately felt comfortable going into the season with 2022 fifth-rounder Sam Howell and journeyman Brissett under center. Holding the reins until Deshaun Watson's suspension ended, Brissett started 11 games for the Browns last season and threw only six interceptions. He threw for 324 yards, three TDs and no INTs in a Week 11 contest at Buffalo and posted seven other games with at least 200 yards and a score. "We got Jacoby Brissett coming off what we believe was one of his better years as a player," Washington GM Martin Mayhew said after signing the eighth-year veteran. "[It's] funny because typically when you get quarterbacks it is when they are coming off a tough time. We feel good about what we did there." The 30-year-old Brissett has 48 starts under his belt, most of them with the Colts, and has always been ready when his number gets called.
Jacoby Brissett 2022 Outlook
A day after the stunning acquisition of Deshaun Watson, reports that the team would sign Brissett to back him up began to circulate. As it turned it, Cleveland traded backup Case Keenum to the Buffalo Bills in exchange for a seventh-round pick and then swiftly moved to sign former the former Patriots', Colts', and Dolphins' quarterback as their new backup. Brissett has made 37 starts and appeared in 60 games in his six-year career, completing 60.2 percent of his passes at an average of 6.4 yards per attempt while throwing 36 touchdowns and 17 interceptions on his way to a 14-23 record as a starter. He has also become a prolific quarterback-sneak artist in recent years, and in each of the two seasons where he was his team's full-time starter, he ran for at least 200 yards and four touchdowns. It seems likely that he will be called on to start games for the Browns this season. Although he settled a majority of the civil suits filed against him, Watson could still face NFL discipline. If Watson is suspended for any length of time, Brissett would be in line to start in Cleveland. It might not be an ideal situation, but it's certainly worth noting.
Jacoby Brissett 2021 Outlook
Not long after losing Ryan Fitzpatrick in free agency to Washington, Miami added more experience at the position by signing Brissett, who is coming off a season in which he served as Philip Rivers' backup. According to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, Brissett is being brought in as a backup and mentor for Tua Tagovailoa, not competition. In Indy, despite Rivers' arrival, Brissett managed to carve out a niche role in the Colts' offense and still appeared in 11 games. Prior to that, after Andrew Luck's sudden retirement in 2019, Brissett was the Colts’ primary QB, starting 15 games and compiling 2,942 yards, 18 touchdowns and six interceptions. A 2016 third-round pick by the Patriots, Brissett was traded to the Colts after one season and served as the team's QB1 in 2017 in place of the injured Luck. He returned to a backup role upon Luck's return in 2018. As NFL.com reminded readers, the Dolphins showed a tendency to pull the rookie Tagovailoa from games last season when he began to struggle. Even though the team has affirmed its trust and belief in Tua heading into his second season, signing Brissett gives the Dolphins a solid player that can both help the franchise QB's development and step in (a la Fitzpatrick), if necessary.
