Dak Prescott 2020 Outlook
Prescott, assigned the team's franchise tag, is hoping to get a long-term deal with Dallas by July 15. Whether that happened or not (it hadn't since we went to press prior to that deadline), doesn't change the QB's value, however. He's playing this season, whether on a new deal or under the tag for this year only, so don't panic. Nobody in Dallas is. In fact, Prescott missing the beginning of installs isn't something new HC Mike McCarthy is even worried about. "The hypotheticals, really it's not really anything I've spent much time thinking about," he said. From a fantasy perspective, there is no doubt. Prescott produced his best fantasy season in 2019, averaging 21.1 points per game. He was strong as both a passer and runner, tying for eighth in points per pass completion and ranking eighth alone in points via rushing attempts. As NFL.com noted, he also ranked as a top-10 quarterback nine times. (Only Lamar Jackson had more top-10 finishes.) Prescott also had five top-5 finishes, tied for the fourth-most at the position. And factor this in: Prescott lost a league-high 392 passing yards on drops. With Amari Cooper and Michael Gallup already on board, first-round pick CeeDee Lamb should make life even better for Prescott (and those who draft him) in 2020.
Dak Prescott 2019 Outlook
For three years, the Cowboys have enjoyed a bargain price for their starting quarterback. The 2016 fourth-round pick's salary cap hit of $725,848 in 2018 ranked 55th among NFL passers. But as his first chance to negotiate an extension hits, his team will ask: What is he worth? Well, in three seasons, Prescott has won 32 regular-season games and one in the playoffs. He has started every contest since Dallas drafted him. His 67 passing touchdowns through three seasons aren't gaudy, but as a rookie Prescott locked down his role as a starter thanks in large part to the ball security he displayed while mounting a 23:4 touchdown-to-interception ratio. Prescott won seven of his last eight regular-season games, completing 71.63 percent of passes and accounting for 16 total touchdowns with just four interceptions during that stretch. Prescott finished fifth at the position in fantasy points scored as a runner with 64.5. He has rushed for six touchdowns in each of his first three NFL seasons (with those 18 rushing TDs ranking tops among quarterbacks in the league over that span). He's not a front-line fantasy starter, however, and you shouldn't overpay on draft day (even assuming the Cowboys will). All that said, you could do worse when considering QB2s with week-to-week upside.
Dak Prescott 2018 Outlook
Prescott took a huge statistical step backwards in 2017 compared to his rookie season, throwing nine more interceptions (13) and one fewer touchdown (22). He won fewer games, threw for fewer yards, had a lower yards per attempt average, a lower completion percentage (62.9 in 2017, 67.8 in 2016) and a lower passer rating (86.6 in 2017, 104.9 in 2016). Prescott must be better in 2018. And there's reason to believe he will be. When Ezekiel Elliott was on the field last season, Prescott was in a rhythm and generated offense. After tackle Tyron Smith worked his way back into the lineup, Prescott's play improved, despite a general regression across the offensive line. It is evident that Prescott needs his running back and key pass protector to make the offense consistently go, but heading into 2018 the odds he'll have both are good. Still, with WR Dez Bryant (released) and TE Jason Witten (retired) gone, the supporting cast beyond Elliott is a big question mark as Prescott's top targets will be Allen Hurns, Terrance Williams, Cole Beasley and third-round rookie receiver Michael Gallup. Dak still has it; we just need to see more of it.
