Jared Goff 2022 Outlook
In the search for the Lions' future quarterback, head coach Dan Campbell recently suggested he doesn't need an elite talent at the position for the team to find success. "I think that those guys like that are obviously, they're special," Campbell said. "But no, I don't believe you have to have one of those guys to have sustained success. ..." Given that, the Lions appear content to head into the 2022 season with Goff under center and wait until next year to go after their quarterback of the future. Campbell even heaped praise on Goff for how he finished the 2021 season for the three-win Lions. "We like Goff and I like where he's at. He finished strong. Keep adding pieces and then, man, whenever that is -- is it next year? Is it this year? Is it two years from now? You figure out a way when it's the right guy." Meanwhile, as NFL.com's Gregg Rosenthal noted, Goff made do with a rag-tag group of receivers led by fourth-round rookie Amon-Ra St. Brown and a bunch of castoffs. The addition of rookie WR Jameson Williams, a strong offensive line and aggressive coaching staff give Goff a chance to improve in his second season with the Lions, but that doesn't make him fantasy relevant beyond two-QB and superflex leagues.
Jared Goff 2021 Outlook
The writing was on the wall when the Rams refused to give Goff a vote of confidence after their loss to the Packers in the playoffs. After that game, coach Sean McVay said Goff was the Rams' quarterback "right now." A week later GM Les Snead said Goff was the Rams' quarterback "in this moment," indicating the team was ready to move on. It had become obvious the Rams no longer wanted to be on the hook for Goff's contract, which carries more than $43 million fully guaranteed in 2021 and 2022. So they shipped the QB and a pair of first-round picks to Detroit in exchange for Matthew Stafford. Goff, the first pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, has passed for 18,171 yards and 107 touchdowns with 55 interceptions and has a 42-27 record in the regular season and has started a Super Bowl. He's also made two Pro Bowls. But last season he passed for a career-low 20 touchdowns, with 13 interceptions as the Rams finished 10-6. Now, going to a team with a new coaching staff and a distinct lack of high-end talent at wideout (both Kenny Golladay and Marvin Jones Jr. moved on as free agents), it's hard to view Goff as fantasy worthy in anything but 2-QB or superflex leagues.
Jared Goff 2020 Outlook
After reaching Super Bowl LIII to finish the 2018 season, the Rams handed out a healthy contract to Goff before he could even entertain the thought of free agency. Last season didn't reflect well on that decision, though. Goff's passer rating fell from 101.1 in 2018 to 86.5. Just 11.7 percent of Goff's yards came on throws of 20 yards or more, the lowest mark in the league, and he threw a touchdown on just 1.8 percent of his attempts, also the lowest in the league. With Todd Gurley and Brandin Cooks no longer in the mix, the pressure on Goff to live up to his paycheck will only increase. He'll need help. As FantasyPros noted, many felt the Rams’ offensive line struggles were a big part of Goff's decline, but he was sacked just once every 30.1 drop backs, which was the third least often in the NFL. The good news? Even with the issues outlined above, Goff was a top-10 fantasy QB seven times last season. According to NFL.com, the problem with Goff, from a fantasy perspective, was that when he was bad, he was really bad. In fact, he finished outside of the top-20 quarterbacks in six of his 16 starts. As a result, he's a QB2 who will be available late in your drafts.
