Tyrell Williams 2021 Outlook
The Lions' ongoing rebuild now includes a former 1,000-yard receiver in the form of former Charger and Las Vegas Raider Williams. The one-year deal, which reunites Williams with former coach Anthony Lynn, is worth a $4.7 million base salary and has a max value of $6.2 million. His signing came at a crucial time for the Lions as the team moved on from free-agent wideouts Kenny Golladay, Marvin Jones Jr., Danny Amendola, Jamal Agnew and Mohamed Sanu. ... A torn labrum robbed the 29-year-old Williams the chance to play in 2020, but he started 12 of his 14 appearances during the 2019 season and was a solid weapon for Derek Carr. Williams is an outside-the-numbers vertical threat. He's a big target with good strength at the catch point. Lynn used Williams' impressive long speed quite well in the Chargers' offense, where, as the No. 3 receiver, his routes were generally limited to deeper throws down the field. He caught 153 passes in three years (2016-2018) in that role and averaged over 16 yards per catch. If Williams is healthy, he will get every opportunity to be a similar guy in Detroit as he was in Los Angeles -- a 40-catch, 650-yard receiver and field-stretching threat on the outside.
Tyrell Williams 2020 Outlook
Williams had a disappointing first season with the Raiders due to a severe bout of plantar fasciitis that bothered him from Week 2 forward. The injury was a setback for the Raiders, especially after Antonio Brown went nuclear and was cut just before the regular season started. Williams missed two games and the bye after Week 4 but continued to play through pain until season's end. He wasn't himself, losing speed hampered his long strides and his agility to make contested catches. That said, Williams can be a productive player when right. He proved that in 2016, when he had 69 catches for 1,059 yards as the Chargers' primary receiver. To be his best, Williams should be a team’s No. 2 receiver, able to make catches down the field and on intermediate routes using deceptive speed. He has also averaged 16.2 yards per reception, and the Raiders need someone who can consistently take yards in chunks. The Raiders are expected to add talent and bodies to the position group, something that would allow Williams to play a more natural, supporting role.
