Darren Waller 2023 Outlook
After playing in just 20 games over the past two seasons, maybe a fresh start is exactly what Waller needs. It took just one week of OTAs for QB Daniel Jones to sing the praises of Waller as a unique weapon and matchup problem for defenses. New York has had just two tight ends haul in at least 50 receptions in a single season over the last eight years. Only one of those tight ends -- Evan Engram in 2017 -- was able to eclipse the 700-yard mark. Saquon Barkley has taken over both the rushing and passing game, and Daniel Jones frequently looked to scramble instead of delivering in the pocket with a shortage of reliable outlets. Jones had 120 carries last season, nearly doubling his previous career high of 65. Sure, things could change this season, which will be Waller’s first with the Giants. New York now has a tight end that had 107 receptions for 1,196 yards and nine TDs in 2020, but that tight end has been a shell of his former self ever since. Waller appears to be a quintessential boom or bust, so see if he slides to the middle rounds, and attempt to grab him then.
Darren Waller 2022 Outlook
Last season, Waller missed five games due to a combination of a knee injury, a back injury and time on the COVID list. In the 11 games he appeared in, he caught 55 balls for 665 yards and two touchdowns while averaging 12.1 yards per reception. In other words, it was a bit of a disappointment following a huge 2020 season. As the Pro Football Network suggested, Waller's struggles are pretty easily explained. His massive 2020 was primarily built on touchdowns. He scored nine that season. According to PFN, his catch rate was 71.6 percent in 2019 and 74.8 percent in 2020. That fell to 59.1 percent in 2021 (partly due to Waller's 8.6 percent drop rate). That wasn't all his fault, though, as his catchable target rate dropped from 87 percent in 2019 to 80.5 percent in 2020 to 75 percent in 2019. So, he could benefit from better play by Derek Carr, but even with that the arrival of Davante Adams is going to be an issue. Waller has been the Raiders' unquestioned top pass catcher for the past three seasons. That's going to change. PFN summed up: "Fantasy managers should consider Waller a top-5 tight end, but we should not expect his production to rise to the difference-making levels of Travis Kelce (or) 2020 Mark Andrews." Sounds about right to us.
Darren Waller 2021 Outlook
Once again, Ben Linsey of Pro Football Focus, agrees with our fantasy ranking of Waller -- but maybe not from an NFL perspective. "Waller has crept closer to the Kittle-Kelce tier at the top of the position with his play over the last two seasons for the Raiders," Linsey wrote. "He's earned PFF receiving grades of at least 85.0 in each of the past two years, falling behind only Kelce in receiving grade during the 2020 season (90.9). ..." Meanwhile, USA Today noted that while Waller could still improve as a blocker, he is just about as good as it gets as a receiver. The Raiders have designed an offense that flows through him. Waller is fully capable of lining up out wide and beating cornerbacks as a receiver. That's why Waller saw 27.9 percent of his team's targets in 2020, which ranked fourth in the NFL, behind only Davante Adams, Stefon Diggs and DeAndre Hopkins. Kelce was the next-closest tight end at 23.7 percent. Waller’s 107 catches last season was the third-most in NFL history among tight ends, behind only Zach Ertz (2018, 116 catches) and Jason Witten (2012, 110 catches). Don't expect that role to change noticeably.
