Malcolm Brown 2020 Outlook
For the past five seasons, the Rams' offense ran through Todd Gurley. With Gurley gone, how the workload will eventually be redistributed is unclear. All options are on the table, according to HC Sean McVay, making full use of a running back corps that includes Brown, Darrell Henderson and rookie Cam Akers. "We feel we've got three really good backs," said McVay. "What does that mean in terms of the distribution of carries? I think that's to be determined." Following Gurley's release, Rams GM Les Snead pointed to the 49ers as a potential model. San Francisco distributed the ball relatively evenly among three backs, while reacting on a game-by-game basis as to who was running the ball especially well. For his part, Brown has long proven himself capable in any situation, but it seems most plausible the Rams will first turn to developing the younger playmakers in whom they recently invested. Still, Brown experienced increased opportunity last season, particularly in the red zone. He rushed for a career-high 255 yards and scored a career-best five touchdowns despite spending two games sidelined because of an ankle injury. And as FantasyPros noted, there were just three running backs who scored more often than every 15 touches in 2019: Darrel Williams, Chase Edmonds and Brown. So he's not without some upside at his current price.
Malcolm Brown 2019 Outlook
After the Rams tendered Brown as a restricted free agent, the Lions tried to poach him away from L.A. They signed him to an offer sheet, but it wasn't lucrative enough to prevent the Rams from matching -- and that's exactly what they did. Los Angeles brought Brown back on a two-year deal, retaining him for depth behind Todd Gurley. But Brown also impacts the game as a vital special teams contributor. On offense, Brown had his best season in the NFL last year, rushing for 212 yards on only 43 carries. He added five catches for 53 yards, and while none of those were career-highs, he was more efficient than ever before. In 2018, he averaged 5.5 yards per touch, 1.3 better than 2017. He's improved in that department each season of his career and assuming he continues to get enough touches on offense that number could rise again. The question is, how much will incoming rookie Darrell Henderson cut into Brown's workload? That the Rams didn't let him sign in Detroit suggests they value the way Brown can impact the game both on offense and special teams.
