T.J. Yeldon 2019 Outlook
The Bills signed Yeldon to a two-year contract in March, the second veteran running back the team swept off the free agent pile this offseason. The Bills' brass had previously added Frank Gore to the backfield, and they subsequently selected play-making rookie Devin Singletary in April's draft. While Singletary seems to be an eventual replacement for LeSean McCoy, the trio of McCoy, Gore and Yeldon offers a diverse skill set to go along with quarterback Josh Allen's running ability. Does the addition of Singletary, Gore and Yeldon lead to speculation the Bills might dangle McCoy as possible trade bait at some future point? Sure. In the meantime, it's worth noting that Yeldon brings pass-catching ability to pair with McCoy and Gore. In four seasons in Jacksonville, Yeldon compiled 1,302 receiving yards on 171 catches. After a 740-yard rushing rookie season, the 25-year-old has played a mainly complementary role -- and spot starter due to injury -- generating 1,132 yards rushing over the past three years. At this point, expect Yeldon to play a third-down role early in the season and see increased snaps if injury strikes McCoy or Gore. Better still, even if the Bills end up dealing McCoy, Yeldon’s role looks to be secure.
T.J. Yeldon 2018 Outlook
Leonard Fournette is locked into the lead role heading into his second season as a pro, but with Chris Ivory headed for Buffalo, Yeldon is in line for an increased workload. Yeldon is a solid third-down back who possesses good pass-catching skills. As Bleacher Report reminded readers, Yeldon's 2017 stats were largely boosted by one performance against the Colts, when he rushed for 122 yards on nine carries, including a 58-yard touchdown run. Outside of that game, his stats fell in line with Fournette and Ivory in the 3.5 yard-per-carry range. Still, as a third-down back Yeldon could have a role. Of course, Corey Grant is also worth watching here after the Jaguars unleashed the speedy rusher/return man during the first half of the AFC Championship Game. But Grant's playing time was fairly inconsistent during the regular season and playoffs. Ivory's departure could open the door to more work for Grant and/or Yeldon, but nobody should be in a rush to draft either man. Expect both to be available on the waiver wire should attrition become an issue for the Jags at some point.
